EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

With all his money I think I could of done better. He should of just rented a bobtail and filled it with water and brought it down to the folks who needed it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Or rented a bigger boat with one of the locals operating it so he could actually rescue someone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I agree that Penn is pulling a publicity stunt. Why would he have his personal photographer with him? their are plenty of photo journalists down their, Certainly he knew that word would have traveled that Sean Penn was in the area rescuing folks. people would have come to report and photograph it for sure.

And his "rescue" boat filled with non refugees. How many folks did he think he was going to put in that thing anyway? With the kind of money he has, he could have done alot of other things including renting a bigger boat with a professional navigator to operate it. I am with him on the body armor though. There is alot of gangbangers running around down their with guns shooting at folks.

Penn is just down there trying to get a part in the New Michael Moore movie about how Bush floaded New Orleans.

Boys, I have a one ton long bed pickup.
If anyone can set it up, I can haul a load plus pull a trailer load of water/food from Houston to NO or Biloxi area Sat or Sun, the 10th or 11th.
If it can be setup and productive maybe two trips?
I do not have a trailer.
If some one has sideboards, that will increase the bed capicity for the truck.
I volunteered the same service to a Fluor group working along the same lines here at work.
If it works out I may be doing the trip as set up by them.
Just trying to get something rolling.

This is the same Sean Penn who made those "lets get high and act like little convicts"...teenager movies ? Probably "spaced out" the drain plug. No doubt "spaced out" several Coast Guard boating regs too...........

Imagine realizing he was your only hope for survival !!!
 
OK, I can admit when I'm wrong. I heard his comments on the news this afternoon. I give he's worthless. However, I still think he left the drain plug out.

John, I thik you're right. Michelle Moore will most definately make a moovie about how Bush flooded New Orleans.
