Shark Week - Truth or fiction?

We watched one of the Shark Week shows the other night. The show was about a 38' shark that killed 2 people who abandoned a capsized tour boat. Other people were rescued but 3 were unaccounted for. Then a helicopter is dispatched with a thermal device to search for the missing persons. Believable so far.
Now here comes the part that I have a hard time comprehending.
The helicopter spotted the 3 people with the thermal, but the people were 40' under the water trapped in an air pocket in the capsized boat. I admit that I don't know a thing about thermal vision, but is a thermal unit capable of detecting a human heat source that is inside of a boat cabin that is 40' underwater?
I just don't believe it, if I'm wrong please educate me.

Every year I watch most of the shows on Discovery, during Shark Week.
I watch because of the "voyeur" aspect.
I have thought sharks were interesting creatures, ever since I first saw "Jaws" back in the '70s.
But, I think those folks that study them are insane.

I have often wondered myself how much is real filming, and how much is "faked real" filming.

From your post, I'm assuming the shark they were talking about is the one they called "Submarine"?
If so, here's something I found hard to believe.....supposedly, on the "fish finder/radar", this huge shark shows up perfectly, circling the boat. Yet, using thermal imaging, there is no sign of it.

I guess, for me, I view these shows just like a lot of shows that I see on any of the channels owned by Discovery...sometimes with a grain of salt...sometimes with a truckload of salt.

But, to answer your (and now my) curiosity, please see the link below.....

I don't think there's a chance of seeing a heat signature from 3 bodies inside a boat that's under 40 foot of water.

You asked so I'll call it...... BS!

They must be thinking about that x-ray vision with FLIR combination you see used on TV shows like 24.
(BTW... I really liked 24, I'm not baggin on it, just say'n)

Discovery Channel, History Channel, and the like decided that actual science and history are too boring. They have moved on to aliens and fake science. All they have to do is show me film of beautiful places and animals doing whatever the animal does and I would watch.

Yep, there are enough amazing places and animals on our planet. No need to make stuff up.

I'd come closer to believing a 38 foot shark, than I would seeing a heat signature, inside a boat cabin, under 40 feet of water. The ocean is a BIG place and there are some BIG critters out there, the other ain't happening.

I'm not even sure thermal would work for picking up a great white. Their body temperature is only 1-2° higher than the ambient temperature of the water surrounding them at most. Yep, I'm not just into snakes. But I have nightmares about sharks though.

Some of the high quality thermal systems are really good.. But 40' and inside of something.. I could see the hull of the boat being warmer becuase of the heat from their bodies, but that also assumes that by the time they arrived on sceene they were not dead. Very rare since it's not like they all fly around with the high tech gear.

I am more likely to buy the 38' shark, maybe a whale shark.. But the 40' thing.. sorry. nope

I believe there's a 25 foot Great white out there. But that whole episode about the whale watching boat running aground of the coast of South Africa has to be fiction. If that had really happened, it would have made the news right after it supposedly happened. Grizz.

Real or not, I love Shark Week!! But I have been a shark geek my entire life. I have jars and jars of teeth I have found walking beaches. I would spend our entire vacations looking for them. It was a thing between me and my grandfather. Even have a Great Hammerhead tattoo on my calf!
