Well I went out looking for some Montana Extreme copper melt tonight. But all I could find for a good copper remover was Shooters Choice copper remover /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif It has 5% ammonia. Is this stuff any good? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif what is your guys take on this stuff?

it is excellent. mix it with kroil 50-50. im sure you will be happy. for your tougher copper removal use cr-10 or sweets. just dont leave em in the barrel too long.

Shooters Choice will do the job although I personally prefer Sweets. Just don't leave any traces of copper removers in the barrel when you're finished. The ammonia is potent stuff. I flush with a good oil like Kroil to neutralize the ammonia. Best wishes.

Same as above I like Sweets ...But I prefer to run a few patches of denatured alcohole after to get rid of all traces of the sweets. then patch dry, and oil.

This may sound stupid but. What kind of harm can the ammonia do to my steal or stainless barrels? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It will etch your barrel FOR SURE! This is not good! do a test stick a small piece of stailess in a jar and cover it in sweets leave it in there for a few hours and take it out and feel it....you will be amazed at what sweets will do.

Sweets will not corrode a barrel unless that barrel is contaminated with Shooter's Choice. It is the combination of the 2, even in trace amounts that can cause corrosion. I have taken a cutoff piece of stainless barrel, mirror polished it and soaked it in Sweets for 24 hours. Even under a microscope there was no corrosion.

It is important when using any ammonia based cleaner to oil the barrel after cleaning. Ammonia based cleaners leave the barrel very clean and with no trace of oil in the barrel. Even the humidity in the air can cause corrosion when the steel is that clean. One oil patch and several dry ones will leave enough oil to prevent corrosion but not enough to throw off your first shot.

Thanks Jack, That is what I thought. I did a test on some stainless today. I left them in a cup with some of the copper solvent for 12hr's. I had no signs of etching at all. The ammonia just evaporated and there was just some oily stuff left in the cup.

Every barrel maker I've ever communicated with agrees that ammonia can/will etch a barrel and most of them discourage it at all. They've seen the damage over and over with their bore scopes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Call any major barrel maker at random and ask... You'll find I'm right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I can't imagine why anyone would ever use a cleaner with ammonia in it when there are so many new products on the market that have absolutely no corrosive effects on the barrels and can be left in as long as you want. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

btw... You can leave steel in ammonia as long as you want if it's submersed with no damage. (don't try this at home with a barrle you like). It's when air get's to it that the damage starts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

About 10 years ago Precision Shooting had many articles examining corrosion by ammonia based cleaners. The articles went on for at least a year. The conclusion was that only the combination of Shooter's Choice with an ammonia based cleaner caused corrosion.

If you call Krieger(who make barrels that win probably more matches than any others since they dominate high-power, which by far is the most popular competition) they will highly recommend Sweets even for extended periods of time.

When they get a barrel returned, they usually treat it with Sweets for at least 6 hours before air gauging it. Yes, I returned a 243 barrel once and they could find nothing wrong with it but gladly replaced it with a new one.

I have been using a good borescope for about 15 years and examined a lot of barrels. The only corrosion I have seen in a barrel using Sweets was where Shooter's Choice had been used or where the barrel had not been oiled after cleaning.

Jack: I just started using some Barnes X types. I wanted to be sure I had no copper. I did purchase Sweets 7.62 to clean with. Is Break Free CLP OK as the oil after the Sweets? Do the new foaming cleaners work as well as Sweets?

Well guys thanks for clearing that up I have been told by many smiths andI would have bet money that just on plain stainless it would etch it....I did know that mixing shooters choice and sweets was a no no! What about Chrom Moly tubes ...will it etch them , just the sweets alone?
