Shooting Games

I was just curious what you guys do to take the monotony out of target shooting? I agree that shooting at targets has its place but to keep my wife excited about shooting I need something extra. I think it would be fun to do with my shooting buddies also. For example, my buddies and I have played poker with a pistol. We spread a deck of cards out on a sheet of plywood and whoever shot the best hand won. I've shot some clay pigeons, fruit and cans of pop but that about it. Nothing original. I'm not looking for anything crazy. Just some good, SAFE fun.

I'm sure some of you are more creative than I am so what do you got?

necco wafers are great targets

Long range shooting at balloons blown up in various sizes can be a ton of fun as well.

A drill that can be done with close range pistol or a rifle is to post a small stick on circle on a paper target. Like the kind people use to post the price of items at a garage sale. The idea is to see who can make the circle go away in the fewest shots.

For some fun on a dull day, take a sheet of white cardboard, smear some grape jam on it lightly, wait for the flies to find it, then move it out about 60 ft. (the flies absolutely will not leave) Then set up with an accurate air rifle, and have a fly shoot. If you like to be really technical, you can put a sheet of white paper at the bottom of the cardboard, and when you're done, count the legs, and divide by 4, to see how many you got! And, yes, regarding the count, I do have some ocean front property here, for sale...

You know, here in Idaho we must have some of them flies that got too close to them nuclear test that the government used to do. They all got six legs here. So to do the same counting that you did, we would have to divide by 6 for this to be an accurate count. Am I right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hang plastic practice golf balls, and soft balls on a string. they will soak up a lot of hits, even with the big guns. If you tie the golf ball to the soft ball with a short string it will keep them from wrapping around the support when hit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Bowling pins work great hanging, or sitting. Most bowling allies will give you a few that are to beat up for them to use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif The pins don't last long with a .44 mag, or .45-70. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Flys like all insects have six legs JFYI

If you're near a creek, you can shoot dragonflies with an air rifle.

Last year during dove season, we took a lunch break under a willow tree and took turns using my Browning 22 take-down rifle shooting at the base of a 12ga shotgun shell at 25 yards, trying to hit the primer and make it go off. Not as spectacular as it sounds, but a challenge none the less. Especially when everyone puts a dollar in the pot and winner takes all.

I have 2 other hunting buddies that are into flintlocks like I am. we do the target poker like you do but at 50 and 100 yards. Even with a spotting scope its challenging and fun.

We shoot flies at 35-40 yards with the CZ .22 rim fires all the time in the summer. The fly traps that have the water and attratant will draw flies by the hundreds, but they smell real nasty. After you get good at it, you only shoot the ones that are moving, and you try to hit them behind the knee-cap.

My favorite target practice are empty cans of spray paint.Golf balls, bottle caps, eggs, and empty shotgun shells make fun targets too but they dont make purty colors on the grass when you hit em.If you have a pellet gun you could always target practice on jaw breakers, suckers,or any other hard candy that vaporizes when you hit them.Grasshoppers, wasps and flys are pretty fun to shoot with a pellet gun too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

At our public range the BLM doesn't want folks bringing things out to shoot because the range ends up littered with golf balls, various cans, fruits, vegetables, TV's, engine blocks and the like. They posted a sign that suggested shooting at the charcoal brickettes. You will be a big black puff if you hit it and the remains will simply disappear in a short time.
My personal favorite is steel. I went to a scrap yard and bought 6 rounds targets (They call them slugs) in 4", 6" and 8". They are either 5/8" thick or 3/4" thick. As scrap I paid 28 cents a pound and they will last forever. I get that satisfying RING when I hit them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This was a good posting. I too want more variety in my shooting for fun. Steel soft drink sized cans filled with water aren't exactly innovative but are fun although bulky to take many to the range.
I'm certainly going to try the practice golf balls and the charcoal brickettes. Don

Shooting a .22 cal air rifle, as I do, I figure I'm off center enough of the time, that 4 legs is about average per carcass. The ocean front property is still available too.

Tannerite targets are always a crowd pleaser. Explosions can be fun when you light them of with a bullet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
