Shooting rest questions

So I went out yesterday to try out some new loads. Realized two things, I need to build a table and also need a rifle rest or something better than the rolled up camo bibs I was wearing out in the field earlier in the day.

Can some of you guys suggest some pretty good ones and I would really like to try to stay under $200 for one. Since I have never bought one before I am not 100% sure what I am looking for so input would be appreciated.

If you have one for sale please let me know.

Please and thank you.

Mike

I use the Lead Sled made by Caldwell. It's the best purchase i've ever made.It really helped to shrink my groups.I think it was under $200.00.

For load development there really is no substitute for a quality pedestal front rest. The three that I would recommend are Sinclair, Hart & the Wichita from Midway. I have the Wichita and am going to purchase the one from Sinclair. The Hart is also nice but the tops for the Sinclair are a little nicer, IMHO. I have been using the Wichita for several years in local BR matches and it has served me well. With the new 6mmBR coming I felt that I needed a sturdier rest, that is what I'll get with the Sinclair. Here's a link for you,

Good luck and good shooting.

Thanks guys, I did not see the other thread on gear to take to he bench started by another shooter.

I tried to delete this thread fingering I could post it in there but in either case I will research the ones you have mentioned.

Again, thanks.

Are you looking for a portable table or shooting rest or both? I have made a couple tables, one I throw in the back of the pickup and whei I sit on the bench, it's like having a 300# table. The other I could carry in a VW bug but it's not near as steady. Both cost less than $20 to make. Let me know, I just took some photo's of the one for the back of my pickup.

I have a Lead Sled as well and the one thing that causes me a problem with it is getting a good cheek weld for fine tuning a scope, but otherwise it's great for stability.

For general shooting or sighting-in, you don't need a high dollar rest, unless you plan on getting into the benchrest type shooting. For a long time, I used an old military ammo can and some shot bags filled with sand to sit on top of the ammo can. That still works just about as well for me. But then , I'm a poor boy with poor boy ways... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Here it is. weight's 40 or 50 pounds but when you sit on the seat, your weight gets transfered to the brace at the back of the table and pulls down on the front. I weigh about 250# so when in use the bench is in use, it actually weights about 300 pounds. The third leg I had to get use to but it didn't take long.

The whole thing is built from scrap material, the table top is 1 1/4" rail car deck. I made another with removeable legs that wasn't as sturdy and the top was two pices of 3/4" plywood laminated together.

bought fold up legs for table for $10.00 and a 2ftx4ft 3/4 ply wood at lowes for $13.50 make good potable bench. Read about it some where think they called it _booger bench.

Get the Caldwell Benchrest, a rear bag,an adj. chair like in a bass boat, and use the tailgate of your truck if you have one. Use this all the time instead of my bench. It is easy and fast to set up and can use it about anywhere.

An adjustable chair and the tailgate of your truck? What do you do, shoot thru the back of the cab? I gotta see a photo of this.
