Shot a 6.5 CM out of a 308????????

I read a post last night on a different forum about a guy shooting a 6.5 CM in his 308. He claims he even his steel at 600yds. A bunch are calling BS on both. Curiosity got me and at midnight last night I'm trying to chamber a 6 CM case in my 308 and it ain't happening. The case won't go in the chamber far enough to even begin to close the bolt.

Thoughts?????

It was hashed, re- hashed, and beat to hash over there.

Looks like the thread was deleted to end the agony.......

I just looked, its still going. I tried again to chamber a 6CM in my 308 and without EXTREME force, which I did not do, its no where even close to letting the bolt close. One member said he shot 15 rounds through a rifle before knowing something was wrong. You would have known on the first one with my rifle.

I know a couple guys that have shot the wrong cartridge from the wrong rifle. One shot a .270 Winchester from his .30-06 and another that shot a couple .243's from his .308 Winchester. Best I can remember the bullets sailed wide and far from the target.

Several years ago, I carried my 30-06 Garand and a 7.62 NATO Garand to the range to confirm zero's prior to a service rifle match the following weekend.

Hoping to shoot the 7.62, but had worked on it because I had been having feeding issues with it. Got it zeroed and it looked good until the final rapid fire string when it jammed, so pulled out the old 30-06 for a hurried zero check in fading light (single loading from prone, w/ammo laying loose on shooting mat).

Apparently, I overlooked one 7.62 round which I'd had lying on the mat previously when I cleared the mat for the 2nd rifle. Anyway, I didn't notice the short round and ended up firing a .308 in 30-06 chambered rifle. That round missed the target frame @ 6 o'clock (hit backstop about 2' below the frame @ 200 yds). I was surprised that it would fire the shorter case but the .308 case measures .350 @ shoulder and the -06 measures .340, so apparently the case wedged in chamber close enough to bolt to provide proper headspace as there was no primer setback. The 308 case looked like a straight walled case w/very slight crimp at the mouth. Didn't harm the rifle, but sure hurt my feelings.

If it is an empty casing, it is likely because it isnt sized for the .308 chamber and it has expanded enough to not enter. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that firing a new 6.5CM cartridge in a .308 Win chamber is possible because I had a guy purchase a .308 for deer season, went and got himself some of that "new 6.5 Creedmoor ammo" and shot 14 rds before realizing something wasnt quite right. Savage somehow warrantied that gun for him. Brand new gun bought at a big box store.

That is a plausible mistake, albeit a stupid one. As far as actually hitting steel at 600 yards, I would doubt it since there would be far too little pressure built up to probably even launch the bullet that far. Case bulging coupled with no contact with rifling would mean there wouldnt be a ton of pressure to begin with

Well.....I just tried chambering a new factory loaded 6CM 108 grain ELD-M in my Remington 700, 308 and the bolt lacked 3/16 of an inch from going into battery. They may chamber in a Savage but they won't in my Remington with out excessive force closing the bolt. Not going to argue the point, just saying they won't in my rifle.
