i want to start hunting deer with my bow this year but, i need to know where i can shoot the deer so it will die on the spot or run no futher than 15-20 yards becase, the area i hunt on isn't all that big and i'm afrade the deer will run out of the area and i can't trak it into other peoples land. sooo was thinkinbg a neck shot might be best but, what do i know?

thanks

Ain't happen'n, unless you can sever the spine with your shot. Better to use a shotgun with slugs or a rifle. Even at the, nothing can be guaranteed.

To stop a deer like you are saying is almost impossible to do every time .And to take a spine shot isn’t far to the deer or to your self as a sportsman.
Leave that stuff to the TV hunting guys. There isn’t a very big target in the spine. BAD SHOT.

The thing with a bow is that they day from bleeding NOT impact or shock.
And if your hunting in a place that is that small you most likely cant use a firearm
So you just have to practice and practices and only take a shot that you know you can kill efficiently with. even if it only 10 yards.
The neck is a terrible place to hit a deer with a bow. You may think it the spot to put them right down but there is a lot of space that only holds meat in the neck and like I sad a deer dies from bleeding out not like a billet.
So the shot you always won’t to take is a chest shot and a chest shot deer will only live for tops 45 to 60 secants if that. But the hole think with bow shot deer is that most of the time they don’t even know they are shot and will walk off or jump and run no more then 50 yards if they are not spooked. (DON’T SPOOK THEM) So get your bow accrued and quiet and you must stay quiet after the shot and most times you will see the deer lay down then just die with in 50 yards of your stand.

Remember this, they don’t know you just shot them . they aren’t that smart to know a guy in a tree just shot them. What they will know is that something just happened and thing happen all the time to them in the wild like running into trees and hurting them selves in many ways . so the will just run off from the anishole sound and then will lay down .
And what happens is like I sad they die from bleeding . and that what will happen they will just bleed out and go to sleep then die. Even if they are hit bad and you don’t spook then they will only run off 50 or so yard and lay down . so if you even think you hit them bad leave them lay without spooking them and they will just lay there and bleed it may take 7 hours or them to bleed out and die but that what is going to happen in the outcome is die. As long as you don’t spook them . if you are tracking a deer and keep finding spot then puddles of blood that is telling you your pushing him . and that the puddles are were
He is trying to stop and then you kick him back up so the hole after the shot hunt is important as well.
Chest shot deer are the best hit deer , dabble long a deer and he will only live for 40 to 60 secants if that.

I know I may have tried to say a lot in a short reply but you can take any of the info that I posted as a reply and we can talk more about it.

george, i know what you mean about the spelling thing, it can be a pain sometimes

thats a lot of info and thanks for taking the time to reply and help me out.... so i just need to try and get a good hart or lung shot, then wait an hour or so and then got look for them?

thanks

1 thing,
Always shoot for the chest , but pick a spot on the chest ( aim small miss small)
And always try and see the hit so you can judge how long to wait before tracking .

Couple tips ,
1, shoot bright fletching. I shoot 3 white fathers OR 3 yellows and my arrows are dipped 9 ‘’ of whiteor yellow
Paint . on the end so I have no trouble seeing the flight.

MEATJIMS.jpg

2, always mark there spot on the ground were you hit them and watch them run off and mark the last place you seen them .
Terrain is a lot different once you get out of you tree stand.
3, first thing you like to do is find your arrow. Then by the hire and blood on it will help you figure out were they were hit. This can help in tracking. The white on the end of the arrow will help in finding it also.
4, reaction of the deer as it’s hit will tell you a lot, when watching video pay attention to the deer reactions when they are hit. A deer that will buck like a bull as in he kicks out both back legs is most likely a lung shot deer. If he hunches up like a mad cat can tell you he is hit a little far back.
The sound of the hit can help you also a good soled (throughrump) is the sound of a good hit.
5, Blood on your arrow, this can tell many stories. Like penetration, bye seeing how far up the arrow the blood is . 6 ‘’ is a good hit . blood all the way up it is better.
Color of blood, is also a good indictor of the shot placement. A bubble long the arrow will be covered in blood. And the less blood the batter the hit. Bubbles in the blood tells you it was a long shot.
Hair on the arrow , a deer has white hair on its under side and the inside of the legs
So if you have a lot of white hair with some brown hair it time to wait.

Look and small the arrow if there not a lot of blood and a lot of fat it also time to wait
Most likely a frontal chest or ( brisket shot witch is not good) TIME.
Bad small or green or brown stomach matter you need to leave lay as long as you can
Like over night or all day. He will just lay up and bleed out or just stiffen up and go in to shock and go to sleep then will expire . don’t worry about the heat of the day it most likely will live for a good time of your Waite.
One last thing if you hunting in a residencle e area . try and stay unnoticed by every one in the area even if you have permission . What they don’t see they can get upset over.
Lot of antis out there and you would be amazed at what they would do to stop you from hunting.
So never leave gut piles laying around and try to put you deer away in your truck as soon as you can . don’t tie it to the roof of your car or hand it out front of your house.
Like I sad what they don’t know will not hurt them.

And if your deer should run on to other property ether get permission to track it or call you game warden who most likely can help you retrieve you game.
Never approach a home or a person with you bow in hand and full camo .
Try and look as normal as possible and as friendly as possible .

Best of luck to ya /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Here is a tip on marking the spot where the deer was standing that comes in handy when you are in a tree stand. Take a feild tip arrow with bright orange paint and shoot it into the ground or target where the animal was standing.

I then am able to walk to that area without disturbing the trail.

I would suggest talking with the adjoining property owener now to get permission to recover the deer if it would be needed. Also have the landowner where you are hunting talk to the neighbors it may help.

If you have people that are opposed to all hunting I would consider hunting off the property line. Never take a neck shot to drop an animal on the spot the chances of doing it right every time due to slight change in distances or wind is very small.

That would work but it’s illegal in most of the states I hunt. The only time I can have a field tip in my quiver is when small game and deer cross over.
Then if you have a field tip I then most have the proper small game required hunters orange on.
And I am very excitable and most like would miss and pull out the field tip on my 2 shot.
And I would not wont to make any noise . even hit bad they will not run that far if not spooked and the secant shot my get them up moving again from the noise

No matter how good you are with a bow, your are going to get a bad hit some time or another. I always carry some wadded up white toilet paper in my pocket while bow hunting. When following a sparse blood trail, hang a piece of toilet paper on bush or small tree to mark last spot where you found blood. If you lose the blood trail, go back to last place you found blood and then look in a little different direction until you find the trail again. The first good rain will cause the toilet paper to dissolve and be gone. No harm done to the natural environment.

That’s a good trick rich, I use that meted my self.

Also when tracking a deer with toilet paper or something it good to put a peace on every other blood spot you find if you lose the blood you can sometimes turn around and see all your markers and if you have been going in a strait line it will most likely keep to that direction .
But remember if you get more then a 100 yard it not hit that well so back off and give the deer more time.

Also they will try and run the path of least residents when mortally wounded .

Couple things more ,
Tracking at night . a lantern works much better then a flashlight for seeing blood.
And I always have a spray bottle of peroxide to spray on what I think is blood to make shore it is what I think it is. I am very excitable and some time get a had of my self.
Also try and keep you noise don’t when tracking a deer and also try and only go out tracking a deer with just a small number of trackers you find your self going and checking what somebody ells thinks is blood all night long. small group if not just you and 1 other guy. And also stop and lesion sometimes you can here a deer fighting trying to get up or make its way away from you

Wow, we could talk about this all night . you get the jist.
Good luck
George

thanks a lot guys i will try to talk to the land owner about the neighbor thing and i don't think i will have much of a problem wiht antis buy ya never now

thanks again

You should check your local regs very closely. I know in OK you can track an animal onto a neighboring property legally there is nothing they can do about it but, you cant have a weapon on you and I believe you have to have orange on no matter the season. I know that would not make friends but in OK you can track your injured game where ever it attempts to go except maybe a military installation. If nothing else call a local game warden they will know.

i'm a visual lerner, could you show me a picture of where i need to shoot a deer and kill it ethicaly?
I went to my stand yesterday and i think its going to be a good year for bow hunting, i have a salt block out there and the area i'm hunting... well me and a frend only hunt it it and i hunt it more than he does so the deer have verry little to no pressure out there and they are neer the residential area so they shouldn't be to skidish.... when i sey resedential area i mean my stand is probly 300' away and a road 20-30' from me so i gess it won't be too bad....

sorry about the grammerical problems

You will probably get a whole bunch of different responses telling you how to hit the "sweet spot", but the really important thing is to stay off the shoulder. A typical bow and arrow will not reliably penetrate deer/elk shoulder. Personally (when bow hunting)I aim right behind the shoulder and about one third of the way up from the lower edge of the animal. Practice practice practice to ensure you can shoot accurately under stress and from actual hunting situations. Todd

great, thanks Weasle... umm i'm going to be hiunting out of a tree... so would that mean i would aim a litle higher? so i'm shooting down into the vitals?

thanks again

here is a chart i mad for my young hunters
I hope it help.

I like to shoot on a quartering way shot and i always aim though the deer at the opposite leg.
i also like to shoot a little farther back angling up though the vitals

now this is just the way i do it every body has there owne way
