Would heavy lead duck shot work good for coyotes? Im using a 12 gauge Mossberg. Do I need to Use a turkey choke? And also, should a 13 year old use a 12 gauge with those duck load in the. Their size 4 shot

simple answer duckloads #4 aren't gonna be the best shell. get ya some #4 buckshot. it's pretty affordable has plenty of knockdown and patterns well with most guns. try your chokes from a modified all the way to your turkey choke and you'll know what to do

Patternmaster Chokes LONG RANGE with Federal PREMIUM buckshot works well. Les Johnson (Predator Quest) uses the same setup for all his hunting and it puts em down good!

I'd use buckshot, not any bird shot. Bird shot doesn't have good penetration in ANY ballistics tests that I've seen, whether it be geared towards hunters of larger game or self defense. Shooting a coyote at long distance will be even worse of an idea.

Personally I prefer #4 buckshot but when I started calling in the early 60's the most popular shotshell was a heavy load of lead 2's.

Renown caller Sam Dudley used a 20 gauge he called Singing Sally and used 3" 2's. He killed one heck of a lot of coyotes with that combination.

This summer, I ran through a couple boxes of buck shot and #t's in my [beeep] gun looking for something that would knock coyotes down.

Forget about 4 shot, its not worth anything. You can kill them, though the ranged will be very short. Save it for shooting ducks, and get some proper shot for the coyotes, a couple boxes of buck shot won't set you back to much, I'd bet its about the same price per shot as good 4 shot.

It took me a while to figure out, but a good choke tube will pattern most any shell well. Really, last year I would have said, get 4 boxes of shells and pattern them. Now I'm of the opinion that you should get a good choke tube, and the cheapest boxes of shells.

Personally I use federal 4 buck, the cheap stuff. It patterns well out of my set up, can be found easily and is cheap to buy. Premium stuff like "dead coyote" rounds work better at long ranges, but my hunting style doesn't call for 50+ yard shotgun shots.

Pattern your buck shot. It could work I guess but I would get a 12 as soon as I could .IMHO What choke is your 20?

It dont have a choke. My 12 has a Modified on it now because im dove hunting alot. I have a Imp. Cylinder and a Turkey Choke for the 12 gauge. I dont have any buckshot now. I was also looking at Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote. It work good?

I hope they shoot better in your shotgun than they did in mine. I was using a Carlson dead coyote choke (.660"). Let us know how it patterns and the choke you are using. I have 48 rounds I would sure be proud of if they patterned decent w/a different choke.

Should a 13 yr. old use a 12 guage? I say, "Why not?"
As for choke & shells, it appears you've got plenty of answers to that.

You also ask about using a single-shot 20 guage. But you state it has no choke.
I have two questions for you...
#1) If you have a 12 guage, why not use it? Unless you're thinking it has too much recoil for you. The 12 is a much better choice than the 20, if you have that option.
#2) OK, I'm assuming you mean that the 20g. doesn't use screw-in chokes. Is it Cyl. Bore, or do you not know what the bore is?

Hey hm, having patterned those Fiocchi shot shells, I'm very happy with them. A very consistant 24-28 pellets in a 14" circle at 25yds. Have done nothing special a far as the shotgun goes. Just using a full choke tube on a 26" barreled Beretta 1201f. The shotgun will shoot 3"ers but only have the 23/4s. I've never pushed past the limit of 25yds with this setup as all shots have been under 20. Usually only carry the shotgun in the thick heavy stuff when you can't see past 25yds.
