shotgun loads for red fox

coyote hunter,

Yesterday I ordered some #2 3" mag 12 guage Federals to try in my turkey gun. I also ordered some #4 buck. My gun is a Remington 11-87 Camo with 21" barrel. I have a modified choke and a super full turkey choke. I'm not sure what chokes I should use. I read recently that sometimes a very tight choke will not pattern as tight as one a little more open. Do you have suggestions for both the #2 and #4 buck?

#2 Hevi-Shot costs a little more but if you take some plywood to the range and see how much further you get the same penetration as lead you'll be sold.
6mm06 pattern it in your gun. I use a turkey choke with mine shooting Hevi-Shot"Dead Coyote" for yotes and #2's for fox and bobcat.

I would use dead coyote but if it dosen't have dense enough patterns for foxes out of your gun try federal ultra shock high density BB it will kill coyotes and foxes good. I have shot a few coyotes with them and they out them down almost as hard as dead coyote with denser patterns. Federal also has a 17/8 ounce copper plated bb lead load that works great but is hard to find. hevi shot #2's or b's would also work great.

6mm06, i have the best results with full chokes in all my shotguns, matter of fact the ones i use most often are fixed full.i havent tried any hevi-shot an probly wont at 2 bucks a shot.but i dont hunt open country either if the fox/yote is 50-60 yrds away ya aint gonna see it around here.

Thanks Guys,

I haven't received my order yet, but I'm looking forward to trying some of these shells. I recently purchased a shotgun scope mount (Remington brand camo) and mounted a red dot scope on my 11-87. I've already sighted in with # 4 Premier Mags. That red dot really works well and would be great for night hunting too. I've adjusted it to the greatest density of shot.

The reason I asked about the #4 Buck and choke is because I was afraid to shoot it in my super full turkey choke. Perhaps it will work great in that one.

Anyway, thanks for the advice and good hunting to all of you.

Hi 6mm my coyote hunting buddy shoots the # 4 buckshot out of is superfull choke out of his 870 3 1/2 and it patten good at 50 or 55 yrds . I am shooting a Rem SP 10ga with a custom choke with Federal lead copper platted BB's 2 1/4oz load. works good on them. But we mostly call in gray fox. VM
