Shotgun question

Heavy Drop

All,

I am not a wing-shooter, therefore I have very little experience with these wonderful guns. My question is if I get a shotgun primarily for home defense (ie Mossberg 500 or Remington 870), can I put a choke on it that will give me the ability to hit predators at about 40 yds. All input appreciated.

Heavy Drop,

A home defense shotgun is usually a good match for predator hunting too. Make sure you get one that has interchangable choke tubes and you will be all set. Shotguns designed for home defense usually have shorter barrels and some have pistol grips too. Both are handy when chasing predators. They are also usually chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells too which will give you some versatility. Good luck with your new purchase.

home defense guns shotguns that are set up as such usually have a fixed choke, usually cylinder bore
and as such are not the best for hunting .....although some shot does work fairly well and actually call for more open chokes (Hevi shot)but the vast majority tend to do better with a more constricted choke
but you can buy a great hunting shotgun that can pull double duty as a home defense scatter gun

I'm seriously considering a Mossberg 935 Tactical Turkey (actually think it's called the Grand Slam or something). It is chambered in the 3 1/2 and has the pistol grip and a 22" barrel. Loaded with some #4 buck would be awesome for predators. Loaded with some OO buck and it will be an awesome home defense.

PATTERN MASTER CHOKE W/#4 BUCK 3" or 3 1/2"!!! I got the dead coyote choke and dead coyote shot, any one want 2 buy the choke(benali threads), let me know because i think it sucks. and the dead coyote loads 2( maybe it's just the 3 shotguns i have). I don't hunt waterfoul,( although i see were lead harms the ducks) so i'm anti tungsten and the lead free movment. theres a reason bullets have been lead based for 400 yrs. I've shot several yotes at 40-60 yrd. ranges w/ dead coyote combo and watched them run off. even though the pattern looked good on paper at these ranges, 40-60 w/ #4(LEAD) and pmaster done deal everytime.

You're right though, it's designed and designated for 3 and 3 1/2 loads. I think, as is the case with a lot of the "magnum" shotguns, that it will shoot the 2 3/4, but doesn't cycle them reliably. It will shoot them, and I understand with the 2 3/4 magnum loads, it will also cycle them.

Mossberg make some nice home defense shotguns in pump or semi auto. They have a military contract for the pump model. I have a 930. Shoots 2 3/4" and 3". Nice reliable gun for the money.
