Shotgun shells, bigger shot instead of HIGH speeds.

For each shot size there are speeds of 1350 fps and 1500 fps. The 1350 fps loads will have much less recoil than the 1500 fps loads will have. This list of loads will show how a 1350 fps load with one size bigger shot compares to one size smaller shot at the faster 1500 fps load.

There is also a 1300 fps lead #8 shot load and a lead #7-1/2 1200 fps load to compare.

By putting these loads in this order it really shows how little you gain by pushing steel loads 150 fps faster than 1350 fps. The main thing that goes up with the 150 fps increase is recoil.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistics

1500 fps steel #6 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 18.1 yards with 2.45 lbs energy.
1350 fps Steel #5 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 21.5 yards with 2.67 lbs energy.
1500 fps steel #5 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 24.9 yards with 2.67 lbs energy.
1350 fps Steel #4 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 28.4 yards with 2.90 lbs energy.
1500 fps steel #4 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 32.0 yards with 2.90 lbs energy.
1350 fps Steel #3 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 35.7 yards with 3.12 lbs energy.
1500 fps steel #3 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 39.7 yards with 3.12 lbs energy.
1350 fps Steel #2 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 43.4 yards with 3.34 lbs energy.
1500 fps steel #2 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 47.7 yards with 3.34 lbs energy.

1300 fps lead #8 shot gets .80" of gel penetration at 48.4 yards with .65 lbs energy
1200 fps lead #7-1/2 shot gets .80" of gel penetration 51.8 yards with .69 lbs energy
1300 fps lead #7-1/2 shot gets .80" of gel penetration at 54.5 yards with .69 lbs energy
1200 fps lead #6 shot gets .80" of gel penetration 70.8 yards with .80 lbs energy

It is amazing the difference in penetration with the bigger pellets (lead). When a BB or T goes 3.70" at 55+ yards compared to birdshot.

KPY uses 20% gel they recommend 1.50" for ducks and 2.50" for big geese, I want 3.70" of 20% gel penetration for shooting coyotes.

The FBI uses 10% gel for testing penetration.

20% gel is harder to penetrate into than birds and coyotes are.
