Should I apply grease to bolt of new gun?

I just picked up my new Ruger K77/22 in .22 Magnum. It is a bolt action rifle. I see the bolt has some kind of grease applied to select spots. I originally thought I would clean the gun, apply a thin film of CLP, then go sight in my new scope. Now I am wondering if I need to reapply a grease and keep some on it as a general practice?

I'll go the other route from Mr. Roberts. I don't apply grease to anything in my firearms, it tends to trap and hold dirt particles as well as gum up in cold weather. I may lightly oil them but I still use that sparingly.

They grease them from the factory to keep it from rusting and the like as well as for lube.

Most folks just light oil. CLP should be fine it's what the Corps uses to clean and lube.

You run the risk of galling your locking lugs if you don't put a little grease on them. Stainless bolts with a stainless action is the worst.

The heads(lugs)of CM bolts and SS bolts are the same.

If your going to use any grease at all on a action part use gunslick. Its been around a long time.I just wipe my bolts off with a silicone rag with a very small drop of oil.Lots of good gun oil today. There is still some stuff to seperate you from your money though. My go to oils today are Butchs gun oil and FP-10.Both smell good too and probably will even attract game animals.

A little 3-in-1 on a paper towel and away we go. If I'm parking a rifle for prolonged periods (ie, my 243 after I've filled my deer tags), it gets a good slathering of moly grease just about everywhere, which gets taken off come autumn.

+1

On bolt guns, I put either Shooters Choice (the red syringe stuff) grease or Gunslick (anhydrous graphite) grease on the locking lugs and sometimes inside the bolt unit. I try to stay away from oils, they trap too much dirt/debris....
