Should I be using a turkey choke with #4 buckshot?

Recently came back from my first coyote hunt, and I am officially hooked! My question that i have is, should I be using a turkey choke when shooting #4 buckshot? Should I stay with just a full choke or should I go to a Turkey Full?

I do, but it doesn't matter.
You must pattern your own gun, load and choke combinations.
See how many pellets you can get in a six inch circle.
Use the search function for "pattern". You will get tons of good posts here. But you will still have to pattern your own.
It's easy. Have fun.

I shot a Rem 1100 & 870 with a standard full choke for years; in both guns, the full choke out performed the Modified choke and just forget the Improved Cylinder for anything other than EXTREME close range shooting with #4 buck and BB's.

In 2001, I started using a Hasings Turkey choke in my 1187, it patterns 100% in a 20" circle at 40 yards, and with 000 buck, 100% pattern in a 15" Circle.

Just be sure and match your choke with your actual hunting situation, and pattern your choke with more than one shot. Often, you will get one bad pattern and one good one...

Good luck!

I used to think that a very tight choke was a surefire pattern killer when used with buckshot. But, it appears that that's not always the case. As suggested in the linked thread, several fellows have gotten very good performance with certain turkey type constriction chokes. But, always remember that the use of good hard shot is necessary for good patterns. And, some loads will perform better than others in producing them. The Federal Premium copper plated buffered load was considered one of the first lead loads to try, in the past. I don't know if that's changed, as all I shoot now are handloads.

Useing a tight choke with Buck tends to distort the pellets and can cause flyers ( individual pellets going off at right angles from the rest of the pattern) Like skipping a rock sort of, Mod or IMP chokes seem to work best with #4 but folks want to be able to throw a tight pattern as far as possible. If your shot gun has screw in chokes you need to pattern it with the type buck you will use at the max range you will need to throw a pattern. But remember fifty yards is really max for a twelve gauge with BUCK sixty or seventy is pushing it a lot. You want a pattern of 80% at extreeme range.

Not only will you have different results with different constrictions of choke tubes, youll get different results with different brand names as well.

If it were me, Id call the guys a carlson's choke tubes, tell them what you have, and what your trying to accomplish and they will be more than willing to help.

When I got my dead coyote tube from them I talked to a tech for 15 minutes about what I hunted, what size shot I used and what would be the best choice for me. I wanted something that could double duty for coyotes and turkeys. He made his recomendation and then told me that if I got it and wasnt satisfied, they'd make it right. Well, the only other call I made to him was to tell him thank you, and that he was dead nuts right on. The only downside, I need rifle sights for turkeys under 30 yards cause the thing shoots so tight with smaller tungsten shot, theres a terrible problem to have, huh? Give them a call.

+1 with Pinecone. I've shot through every choke I got with my Xtrema, but my Comp-N-Choke XXX turkey patterned the best with Winchester Supreme 3" #4 buck.
