Should I Get a Savage B-Mag for $199?

I can purchase a new Savage B-Mag for $199 at a local gun store. I hear the gun isn't that great (some seem to be good and some don't), but for $199, it seems hard to pass up. Should I pick one up for this price, or is it a waste of money?

I would buy it at that price, especially if it is the new heavier barreled model. My son has one of the good skinny barreled models. No mechanical issues and good accuracy. We have found that much of the problem with the BMag is inconsistent Winchester ammo. With Hornady announcing that they will be making .17 WSM ammo next year, I think you will have a more consistent cartridge. We got some fliers with 20 grain WW ammo and several of those fliers had cracked case necks. Winchester's annealing and brass making worked fine for nail gun ammo, but needs work for accurate ammo. It does take more effort to get good groups with the very light rifle. Any errors will be magnified by the guns 4.5 pounds.

If it is the heavy barrel B Mag rifle I would get it and also order wood stock for it. Since first reading about the 17 WSM cartridge I have only found one box of ammo to purchase.

I've seen the ammo all over the place around here - Sportsman's Warehouse, Scheels, Cabela's, and a number of local gun stores. It's about $15/box. The $199 is the sporter barrel gun - the heavy barrel (blue) gun is $249. I'm still thinking about it...

I bought one, tried it and sent it back to savage because the target looked more like it was shot with buckshot at 100 yards. Savage then sent me a what they called an 'improved' version which was just as bad as the first. Sent that one back with a request to refund my purchase price and they agreed. If you have money to blow and like to get frustrated then by all means buy a b-mag. I keep hearing about great groups some are getting with their b-mag and am beginning to wonder if these groups were shot at 10 yards instead of 100. Pretty bad when my Marlin 60 .22 will out shoot a new fancy rimfire.
