Show me some wood!

A couple of years ago, I bought a Remington ADL stock off a member hear for $40. I wasn't expecting much but it turn out be be pretty nice with some nice figure in the wood. Its glossy finished and now I'm thinking a nice oil finished stock would look good on my old beast. So,I'm thinking of redoing mine. If you have some you've redone, post them up, I need ideas.

Not a re-finish. Built this one in 1954 or so. Hand rubbed oil finish. Takes time, but worth the effort years later.

ETA: Not a commercial oil. Used blend of boiled lindseed oil, varnish and china drier. I want to say about 20% varnish but been too many years. Have applied a thin coat every few years as needed. The last couple of times with commercial blend.

I watched a video using boiled linseed oil. I like the results. Your stock is finished the way I want mine to look,or very similar. Thanks hm.

I'm refinishing a Remington 660 stock right now that was pretty beat up but has some beautiful marbling in the butt stock portion. I plan to use Tung oil on it. The real kind, not the Lowes/Home Depot variety. I've also done several with Watco brand Danish oil, sometimes with a couple of coats of spray satin poly (I used MinWax brand) that turned out nicely. I don't have any pics of any of those at the moment.

I refinished another Remington years ago and guess I had forgotten how tough the factory finish was. I haven't resorted to sand blasting yet but spray paint has crossed my mind. Man that stuff is tough to get off.

Would acetone or MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone)cut it? Used to make MEK and it'll cut most paints.

CZ's use to have some really nice wood on them. The newer ones seem to be a little plainer, but still pretty nice. Those two have some nice grain. They look good.

Well, the old gunsmith that mentored me while I was building my stock said the formula for a good oil finish is, "one coat per day for a week, one a week for a month, one a month for a year........you get the idea.

Joking aside, the beauty of the oil finish is as it dulls, you can just add another coat; scratches can be blended in easily. The stock will tell you when you need another coat. I'm sure some woods seal quicker than others and it depends on how much shine you want, as well.

Mine turned out just the way I wanted it to look. I did give it a few coats of wax just to seal it up a little. It darkened up a little and the Remington red look is gone. It should look good next to to the big buck I hope to shoot this fall. LOL!!

CitriStrip works quite well, IMO.
