Sierra Factory and seconds bullets?

any of you all tour the Sierra Factory in Sedalia MO?
and have you bought any of the bullets from their outlet?
thinking of taking a day since Sedalia is only a couple hour drive from me and pick up some of their outlet bullets. anyone had any problems with their bullets from the outlet?
 
Yea we took the tour 2 years ago. It was a fun experience.
bought way too many 2nd bullets, Some were good, some were not.
Got a bunch of 55gr Blitzkings that had no lead and alot didnt have the green tip.

all the 77gr SMK were perfect except the copper had discolored, but they shot good.

few thousand .277 110gr pro hunters, most had spurs on the tip and some had missing lead.
 
I used to live 40 miles from the Sierra plant and bought a bunch of .204 and .223 bullets at the
Factory Store...It's always a good idea to call ahead and verify that they have what you need before arriving, unless you want to take a tour...

A few years ago, I picked up several pounds of 39gr SBKs that were seconds and even though some had bent or upside down tips, after cutting off the tips, they shot really well...When I weighed them for weight consistency, most were pretty much on spec...


 
OldTurtle...so you just took the poly tip off the bullets that were installed wrong and they shot fine?

our thinking was with the ammount of different calibers both my nephew and myself have to load( i have 3 he has 6)it would be worth it to take a drive to get a pound or two of each caliber we use. even if 1/3 of them arent in spec weight wise its still a good deal with the ammount you get
 
The ones that are in backward can be pulled out with a pair of pliers and you wind up with a match grade hollow point...The ones that are bent can be cut off with a pair of wire cutters..Still shoot good (at least at the 100-200 yard ranges)...

The have a chart that gives the approximate number of bullets per pound...If my memory hasn't slipped too far, I think the batch in the first photo was four pounds and worked out to about 850+/- .204 bullets..I picked up a few pounds of .224 50gr ones as well that are not in the photo...

...By the pound is the way they are/were priced.. At one time I had a copy of their pricing list, but that was about 2006-07 and I've move two times since then...
 
When the plant was in Southern California I bought Sierra seconds by the pound. There were no plastic tipped bullets back then so I can't comment on them. But........I used 75 grain bullets in my 243 with no problems and killed a wad of coyotes and bobcats with them. When I got a 22-250 I used the 52 grain HPBT bullets. I weighed each bullet and they were all exactly 52 grains and no blemishes were visible. Sierra used to give out a Sierra Expert Award. To qualify you had to have a rangemaster watch you shoot 10 shots into a less than 1 inch group. With my 222 I shot a 10 shot 1/2 inch group with factory seconds.

For hunting I used the Sierra Spitzer Blitz out of my 222. When I got the bullets there was a ring of lead at the copper casing near the point. It was easily removed with my thumbnail. I weighed the bullets and they were 50 grains on the money. I killed a couple hundred coyotes with them. I wouldn't hesitate to use them today.

I've been there twice and am looking for an excuse to go again. My only problem with them is that they used to have a rule about only being able to buy 25 pounds of seconds per visit. Trust me, crying on the counter gets you no sympathy from the nice counter girl.
Best to leave most of the haul and the receipt in the car until the misses is out for a bit.
