Sierra Game King questions...

I recently loaded up some firepower for my Savage 99A in 250 Savage. I got a deal on 2 boxes of 100 grain Sierra GameKings on this site a while back so I decided to work up a load for them. Final product was the 100 grain pill sittin' atop 33.5 grains of IMR 4064, with Federal 210M primers. They group well under 1.5" at 100 yards, not bad at all for a lever gun. My question is, will the Sierra perform well at distances under 125 yards on Whitetail deer? Velocity is at +/- 2800 FPS. It's just that I have read a ton lately about the Barnes TSX and TTSX pills, and wondered if I can have faith in my 250 bringing down a big Maine buck? Thanks, Rich.

That combo will kill any deer that lives if you do your part. I love Sierra and have used Gamekings to kill many deer. They are all the bullet you would ever need for calibers that aren't pushing the bullets extremly fast. That is the case with any traditional cup and core type bullet, don't try driving any of them through an elks shoulder at 3500 fps and you will be fine. In my opinion those are the only time the super expensive premium bullets are necessary, i.e. large heavy game and very high velocity. I have used the 30-06 for years on elk though, so I dont have to worry about it, 180 grain Gameking at 2800 fps gets it done every time.

Nothing wrong with Sierra Game Kings.

I use the 180 Gr. pro Hunter .308 Cal. bullet for elk and deer in my 300 Win Mag and never a failure to put the animal down.

The Game king is basically just the Pro Hunter with a Boat tail.

Some rifles like the Flat base Pro hunter over the Boat Tail Game Kings, at least the pro Hunter shoots better groups than the Game Kings do in my 300 Win. Mag.

Yes I know I probably could change my recipe and make the Game Kings shoot every bit as good as the Pro Hunter Bullets.

Those gamekings will do just fine, as will your 250. Combos like that worked for many years before all the magic bullets came out. Good luck chasing your Maine monster.

The 250-3000 savage was the first rifle i ever bought, in 1964. I killed enough deer with it in the next couple of years that i almost flunked school because i was hunting and not at school.

As everybody said above, it wil take any deer you come across with the sgk, if you do your part. blue

Now you guys got it all wrong. How are the gun writers going to make a living if you guys tout the lowly Sierra bullet?? G_d only knows---you must spend over a dollar a bullet to kill a deer. Why this is blasphemy!!

For the vast majority of hunting and shooting these premium hunting bullets are a real joke. They are meant to catch the hunter.

If you want to waste your money, then go ahead, it is your money. I have tried the Barnes bullets and some of the other bullets as well. I fell for the same advertising trickery. And that is exactly what it is.

When you go after heavier game then you should acquire a heavier caliber. It is that simple. The problem with the premiuim bullets is they are trying to get a diminuitive cartridge to do what the heavier cartridge will do. And of course that costs a dollar a bullet?? For what?? Tom.

I have been shooting deer with 100 gr gamekings in my 25/06 @ 3000 fps for 20+ years. most are bang flops. the latest was a 190 lb 10 pt on 11/21/09. the shot was @ 200yds. the bullet hit mid way of the neck & stopped just under the skin after penetrating the off shoulder. the perfectly mushroomed bullet weighs 84.3 gr. this is a very typical example of my experience with this combo. you have got a great load. happy hunting.

I do not disagree with what Hogghead said.

However, I do feel the premium bullets like TSXs do have their place. It just depends on what caliber, and what you plan on using them for. I choose 62-70gr TSXs for deer in 223. I'd consider the price of a box of TSXs to be a drop in the bucket if I were paying to go on an elk hunt or African safari. Cheap insurance. Money well spent IMO.

That said, I have killed deer with lots of "ordinary" bullets. SGK, Win PP, Hornady IL, Speer HC, Rem CL, etc. and none have never not worked.

Still, If you are going to skimp on hunting equipment, the bullet ain't the place to do it. I'd rather have a TSX or Partition than any of the above for larger critters......

Cheap insurance is really only cheap insurance if it works. My limited experiences with Barnes bullets have generally been poor to fair making a skimp for less expensive bullets a better choice. Partitions are great but I refuse to use Nosler bullets on principle (we had issues a few years ago)so I'll keep using GKs effectively and even save a few bucks in the process...no pun intended.

Yes, the SGK's are great at distance, up close not so much. SGK's and SMK's are integral parts of my most accurate loads in 270 and 22-250. It is not a "majic bullet" by no means, shot placement is still the key to bang-flop.

My 30-06 (thanks DAB) loves game kings. With the load DAB had worked up before giving it to me it will shoot nice little tight groups and I have no doubt the 180gr would make an elk fall flat! Rp
