Sierra MatchKings for coyotes...

I was in need of a lighter weight bullet for my 260 Remington for hunting coyotes this winter. All they had in town were 107 gr. Sierra MatchKing HPBT's. A nice looking, sleek bullet with a BC of .420! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif But what will they do when impacting a coyote?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Are they going to pencil through or blow up or somewhere in between or.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I plan on shooting them at 3000 fps, and this will give me impact velocities of 2900-2700 fps on my average shot, and my max would be about 350 yards, which is 2300 fps...what will this bullet do?? Is it predictable?

I am just unsure if this target bullet is up to the task..I guess I will have to try it and find out for myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've used .243 70 gr matchkings on pd's and one coyote. Coyote went down, got up and ran for at least 400 yards. Last i saw of him, pd's had some pencil through and some expand.

Welcome to the board 6mm!

Tod,
We use 168 match out of our sniper rifles for deer and it is one killin machine. Same goes for the 69gr .223's. I would think the 107 should do the trick but a yote is much less body mass. Let us know what you find out? Have not heard of or tried this bullet personally.

Check this out.

I also done another test later using the 165gr GameKing and the Nosler 165gr Spitzer, which these did the exact same as the Sierra Matchking.

I wouldnt worry about the Matchking on animals, most of the stories I have heard are usually good.

Sure you can say that you shot a coyote with a matchking and watched it run off into the sunset, but then I have also heard time after time that people shoot deer with a 300 win mag and the deer runs off also and never was found while using the so called proper hunting partion bullet.

They way I see after all the animals I have killed it is mostly due to PROPER bullet placement!!

Sounds like you are not going to save fur, so I would bust the ole coyote right in the shoulder and watch that little bullet clear a whole all the way though.

Tod,

As I mentioned I am shooting the 95 gr VMax out of a 22" 260R. The velocity is 3250 over a Oehler 35P with 44 grs of RL 15. I use CCI Br primers in all standard cartridges.

This load shoots in the 1/4 to 1/2 MOA range and the bullets Ci is .365.

I am going to stay with it and not bother with the 107's. They sure are a sexy looking bullet however.

Try this. Stuff a 1/2 gallon carton with wet newspapers and shoot it at 200 yds. You can check your sights with it. If the MK does not blow it all over the place then it's not like the 95 gr red tip.

Well i got out and tried the 107 gr. MK today.

With RL15, I got groups of : 40 grains - .99", 41 grains - .32", 42 grains - .45", very impressive for my mtn rifle!

Now, I shot one milk jug at 100 meters, and one at 200 meters. The 100m jug was destroyed on exit, big rips and tears, but the 200m jug had just a little rip on exit, nothing like the 100m jug. Does this mean inconsistent expansion?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyways, they shoot great on paper, I will load a bunch more up at 41 grains RL15 and do more testing!

I use the Nosler 100gr. Bal. Tip in my Remington Classic in 6.5x55. It's quite accurate and a good killer of most predators. I load it with IMR4895 42.0grs. in Lapua brass. Best wishes.

I shot some more jugs today, and had pretty consistent expansion on them from 50-340 yards...so I will go out after coyotes tommorow with the 107 gr. Sierra MK's. My muzzle velocity is 2860 fps.

Called in 2 'yotes this morning, got a 90 yard frontal shot on one of them. Knocked him down, he spun around a bit, then he gathered himself and took off straight away, and I hit him again, knocking him down once again. He got up and dissapeared from view into the brush. Impact velocity was around 2650-2700 fps. As I walked up to the scene, I was like :

, I ain't exactly shooting a 17 HMR here!

Found some hair, and the blood trail in the snow. Followed it for 30 minutes, started out pretty thick, then slowly got less and less, until he dissapeared into his den in a brushpile.

I am going to order a box of 95 gr. V-Max tommorow!
