Single or double reed?

As far as closed reed handcalls go, do you guys prefer the single reed in cottontail or jackrabbit, or the double reed voice?

Sure, Beav,
With few exceptions, nearly all the closed-reed calls available use the same basic JC Products voice and most are of the single reed variety, with a single stainless steel reed. The double reed type is the same dimensions as the single, but has two stainless steel reeds, one above the other, with the topmost reed having two small dimples in it to prevent the reeds from sticking together and fouling one another. The sound they produce is more raspy than the singles. I personally, like a single jack voice more. But, I'm finishing a run of thirty new calls and would like to get a feel for what callers want in voices and if it would be worth it to invest in a quantity of these reeds in addition to the singles.

Forgot to add one important point... all these reed styles are depicted in Jay Nistetter's piece on tuning calls in the most recent issue of Trapper & Predator Caller magazine, including the double.

Lance I Like the singol for Jacks and dubble for cotton tail. my next order of reeds will be dubs for c.tail. see you later Kevin Makker of K-Kalls

Had a Haydels Govt. call that used a double reed. It was a POS that constantly locked up and was a PITA to clear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif . I got super POed at it one night and took some aggression out on it.

Bought some K-Kalls and I'm happy now :) And if I do get mad, the metal bodies will resist temper tantrums a whole lot more.

Edit: Ooops is K-Kalls and not K-Calls /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Do any of you older guy's remember the double reed Jackrabbit voice that they used to use in the Circe calls? The reed looked as though it was made of galvanized metal and had a very loud and raspy sound that coyotes could not seem to resist. All of a sudden someone at JC products decided that the original reed was too quick to give out to slobber rot or something. Now they have gone to stainless steel, which just don't give that good old sound of the original Circe. I don't use enclosed reed calls anymore, but I am still wondering why they discontinued such a good reed.

All the old Circes I used had single reeds, I did like the brass reeds that was used too. I had one real raspy sounding that got coarser and barber@axs4u.net coarser, work like mad on Bobcats, took it over to Jack Cain and he popped reed out, it was brass that had cracked half in two- I think I was making a kitten sound or something with it without knowing, wish I had it still. I still get some older calls in to tune or replace reeds, they are all the Wintress reed and useally corroded but still work.

Lance H,

Up here in the high desert the raspier the sound the better, Cotton tail or Jack. When I order I always get double reeds, you can pry one off to make a single if needed but you can't add one. LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
