Skinning squirrels made easy?

What exactly would you do with the skin of a squirrel?

I guess you could try eating them with the hide on, but I think it'd be a mouthful... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Gotta skin them to get to the meat, right... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Squirrels are some damn fine eatin'... That's a really slick way of cleanin' 'em.... I'll hafta give it a try. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yes its the easiest way Ive been doing it like that for about 14 years. I had some fried squirrel and squirrel gravy a couple weeks ago. I got 3 grays this morning. They are soaking in salt water now.

I was eyeballing a large chipmunk the other day and was thinking of sitting him on top of my foxpro.

I've tried that method on various occassions in the past with no success. After viewing the video the other day I went out that evening and took a squirrel from the woods to give it another try. I don't know what is wrong with our sw Ohio squirrels but they just don't want to give up their coat. All I ever succeed in is pulling the tail off. ?
Looks like a great idea, though.

Christopher,
Make the cut at the base of the tail completely through the bone, AND, make sure you skin just a little bit wide along the top of the back legs on both sides. Doesn't have to be a lot, but the cut needs to be spread across the top of the "hips" to be effective. I'm talking left - right. If the intial cut is too narrow that is exactly what happens, you either pull the tail off, or get just a narrow strip of hide that doesn't go all the way around the squirrel and then upward.

Squirrel skins are very tough. The native americans used them for bow strings, and NO, they did not have to tie many many pieces together. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They cut a continuous spiral of rawhide starting at the center of the skin and making one long piece. Several of these pieces wetted and twisted together became the bowstring.

There are probably other uses for the same cut like webbing or??????????

That is the way my dad taught me to do it about 35 years ago. I didn't know there was any other way. Christopher, I can tell you where you are going wrong. After you cut through the tail bone, you will notice a white membrane and senew attaching the skin the the butt portion, you have to cut through this membrane. If not, the tail will pull off and you have a problem. If you have more than one to skin, skin them all and drop in water as you go. After all have been skinned, start gutting. I took eight this last weekend and had them all in the kitchen sink within 30 minutes of driving in the driveway.

Cool, all these years I sliced around mid back and pulled opposite with both hands. I'll give this new method a try.

Maybe a Pa. thing. Been doing it the same way silencer for the last 30 years.

Will have to try this way out this fall and see if its easier.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the imput. I did notice that the man in the video cut down the back of the legs which was the first I've heard about that. I tried that, too, but I must have missed the sinew and white membrane at the base of the tail. It is impressive the way that fella shucked the skin off as fast as he did. If I have any more problems with this method I know where to go to ask.

I was taught the same way as you guys 30 years ago. I have been using the method in the video for the last couple of years with mixed results. After watching the vid. I can see where I have been going wrong.
