Skinny FF fore end comparison.

There was some recent discussion on skinny free float fore ends, and I finally got the camera and rifles out this weekend. So here are a couple of shots of two rifles. The rifle on the rest, without optics(waiting on a Vortex Viper HST 6-24), is a 6mm WOA, wearing a Matix Foxtrot Keymod 15" fore end, with a Wilson Combat low profile gas block under it. The rifle on the bipod is a 223 Wyle(ARP Barrel), wearing a MI G3 M-Series 15" fore end, also with a Wilson Combat Low profile gas block under it. The last picture is a close up of the Matrix hand guard to give some idea of the slight difference in finish color. I am not fussy about any slight differences in black on my black rifles, but if some are, then this may be an issue for them. Also, there was a recent thread about clearance of gas blocks, under Matrix fore ends. One of the pictures shows the gas block channels, of the two fore ends.

My comments on the two fore ends, is for the money, and those looking for a skinny FF fore end, on a budget, the Matrix is a excellent choice. As long as one isn't color matching fussy. But with that said, the MI is excellent quality, finish, and function. The fore end is captured on the barrel nut, both by friction tightening the bottom hex head screws, but also with little fingers that match up with barrel nut, which eliminated any fore end rotation under stress. If I were going into combat, it would be the MI fore end, but for everyday shooting and predator/varmint hunting, the Matrix will do nicely.

Thanks for the review Squeeze. I've been considering replacing the YHM free float tube (plain, aluminum, non picatinny, non keymod tube) on my rifle with a Matrix Foxtrot. Still on the fence.

Me, too. I have a couple of rifles, assigned to home defense, a 5.56 NATO, and a 6.8 SPC, that both wear YHM quad rail FF fore ends. I wrap them in Vetwrap, so the I have the rough on the hands part fixed, but after putting four of these skinny rails, on some of my other rifles, I might just go low cost, and put a couple of Matrix tubes on them. I am not much for hanging crap on my rifles, even the HD rifles. A good red dot, co-witnessed with some pop up battle sights, and I an good. So the big bulky quad rails seemed like a good idea, that has faded. The nice thing about the keymods, is if I do decide to hang lights, cameras, and fog horns on a rifle, I can just add keymod rails.
