lookin at turnin my sks into a yote gun....... with a little
Hornady zombie max ammo and a new spring case with a dovetail mount and shell reflector and just a cheap bushnell scope i will be set..

If you can get the scope to hold a zero you will be set. Kinda. It will be fine for medium range and in. I have not seen one that will stay sighted in for long.

It could be a fun project, good luck.

Irish you just have to be different dont you!! :) There is a reason most of us arent using SKS's, Mini's and the sort. But hey, if thats what got then roll some coyotes with it!!

Good luck!!

Hey I did a little reaserch and found that the Choate scope mount does work really well. You have to drill and tap four screws into the receiver thought.

Now you got me thinking of sporterizing my old SKS. Thanks, that's all I need!

My opinion is that any rifle you can shoot well makes a very nice coyote rifle. Some are better choices but if you can't shoot the one you have you might as well not have one.

there are a few Companys that make tact mounts far an sks so I dont know i just dont have the mone far a 223 or 22-250 or else id be yippin yotes with that

It will work fine, i have gotten back in to playing with mine and am using the open sights on it and punching big holes through a 14" piece of 3/4 plywood at 350yds.

Not the smallest groups for sure back, but still minute of coyote. I'm using the factory sights with the rear one painted chromeium yellow and the front one painted hot pink, works very well with these old eyes and works good in the shade.

The ammo is silver bear s.p.

I have a Norinco paratrooper carbine. It has about 8000 rnds through it and still keeps the bullets in the black at 200 yards iron sights. Every time I have pulled the trigger it went BOOM, never a FTF or FTE. The only change I made to it was took the bayonet off and put a small wood block in the stock magazine to restrict it to 5 rounds. I use mine mostly as a loaner gun. I have family that don't feel the need to buy their owns guns since I already have mine. Ammo is cheap and readily available so getting in alot of trigger time wont break the bank. It is trigger time that kills coyotes not having the latest and greatest gear. It's a solid gun that shoots a solid round, should be great. Good luck!

I just got mine sighted in a few days ago. I put a scoutscopes.com scout mount on it (replaces the rear sight) and a red dot sight. It also has a dragunov stock and I had the barrel cut just behind the grenade launcher threads :>)

I think it should make a pretty good short to mid-range coyote rifle. I'm gonna give it a "shot", anyway...

My rig. how accurate it is with Hornady SST ammo. Coyote #1 ... And coyote #2. ...people said it shouldn't /couldn't be done..so I just had to try it!

When I took up calling, 20 years ago, I used a Norinco SKS...it was the only rifle I had at the time.
Ironically, for the few years I used it (before coyotes) to take deer, I just used the iron sights.
But, once I decided to use it for coyotes too, I added a scope to it.
It helped some, with accuracy.
But, I was never happy with the mount and scope (cheap stuff).

But, heck, I took down a few critters anyway. Hahaha

Newfboy, your mount & scope look to be quite a bit better quality than what I was using.
Did you leave the bayonet on there in case you had a coyote jump in your lap, from behind? Hahahaha
{Nice looking gun, BTW.}

I'm using a Wartak SD rail ..it is mounted on the gun and has never moved ..it's only drawback is you can't use stripper clips anymore..but that's ok I'm not using this gun for
Target practice..I only use hunting ammo in it so it does not have to be cleaned as much ..I find that the rifle is extremely accurate and can hit out to 100+ yards on coyotes ..which in the forests of Newfoundland long range shots can be few ..the reason I left the bayonet on it..just didn't feel like removing it so I just covered it in camo tap.
{Nice looking gun, BTW.}
guys this is the story of my hunts it is a post I submitted to another site back when I took the coyotes ..I don't type the best so please bear with me ..well here goes ....I have killed two coyotes so far but still know nothing about realy hunting them..I have two rifles which i use, a SKS 7.62x39 and a savage axis 22-250, my call is a Johnny Stewart Attractor II with a Spypoint Amplifier to boost its sound, my decoy is the Primos Sit' n Spin crazy critter.
The First time I hunted i used my SKS, with the newfoundland bear licence you are allowed to hunt coyote. So i set out, went to a local rock pit where i had seen plenty of signs of coyote.

The rock pit is long with a huge rock cliff quarry on the south side, north side has two large crushed stone banks about 30 feet in height and near the north-east is a sand bank. The area is not realy a good spot to setup on account of the awkward terrain...so i managed to setup on the rock quarry cliff its self and i set my decoy about 50-60 yards across wind from me but slightly east and up wind.

I started off with Cottontail in distress for about two mins..then i would silence it for about five mins. After about 3-4 sessions of this i switched to jackrabbit in distress and did one session the same as when i started with the first sound...halfway between the second call i noticed a LARGE canine pop out of a old skidder road directly Across from me...I was startled...I was expecting something the size of a fox...not a small german sheppard...So..I got a good view in the scope of it just make sure it wasan't someones dog ...deduced it was NOT a dog...meanwhile the coyote was coming closer to the edge of the pit...it peered out from behind a huge bolder at the decoy then looked up and down the pit to make sure it was safe...I didn't give it the chance to step a paw onto the pit i aimed at its head and let the old SKS loose...BAMM!...Missed...the coyote bolted back to the skidder road it had came from...then it stopped roughly 100 yards turned broad side and turned its head and looked back...I did not have a shooting bi-pod or rest ..its why i missed with the first shot...but this time i steadied the old gun and Fired ...BAMM!...the coyote yelped and flipped over then got up and ran further into the skidder road...My heart was pounding at this point..so i waited 10 mins then reloaded the gun and crossed the pit and started to track the blood trail..first i noticed two tiny drops...and I started to worry..but 5-6 more feet from that was a splash of blood..like a cup full...this continued and the blood trail got bigger and bigger...after about 25 yards of tracking I found it curled up dead...the bullet which was a Hornady SST 7.62x39 had hit it directly in the vitals ...indicated by the small hole..due to my stand the bullet was traveling at a downward angle...so it went in nice but exited the other side of the coyote at the lower chest.

It was my birthday this same day so i was happy happy happy lol..I continued to hunt this pit again for the next week or two...I think that this was a wrong Idea because even though there was more sign of coyote scat and tracks near the sandbank ..nothing came out to my calling. Rabbit snaring season was fast approaching so i decided to toss out a few snares and then i would cut firewood and check the snares everyday..did this for a couple weeks and gave the area i was hunting coyotes in a rest..One day i had heard a local resident say he had seen the biggest coyote he had ever seen at a bog where he stores his firewood to season..He is a bit of a comical liar sometimes so i just passed it off as him trying to pull my leg.I was waiting around the house one day ..bored so i decided to head up to this bog..I approached the bog from the eastern trail..went out onto it and setup my decoy and call ..crosswind ..wind here always blows east on this bog..it was a foggy and cold morning ..no wind..perfect..I started off with my cottontail in distress 2 mins and 5 silence...did this for four tries...suddenly ..I hear a Moose grunt...moved from the same trail entrance of the bog as i had walked...crossed the bog to the south side continued to grunt until it got directly across the bog from myself and the call.

Sounded like the Moose was a Person using the old beef bucket and wet shoestring call..this continued for 45 mins or more as the fog started lifting..suddenly i look out ..decoy ran out of battery power...I was afraid to stand up and go to it ..fear of being shot..eventually the sound moved off the bog and by this time the fog had lifted completly..i went out retrieved my gear and left.
A few days after I decided to try the bog again..most moose hunters were out of the area by now..I arrived at the bog at around 7am. This time i approached from the north-west..the trail went straight to the bog, and directly across from the trail was what i can only describe as a ...Island of spruce trees.

I decided I would set my decoy about 50 yards on a mound in the moss and pinned the call into a old rotten tree near it...walked back to the Spruce Island and got the SKS ready and sprayed myself down with Scent killer. The wind was picking up by this point..blowing straight in my face from the east..I thought about quiting but said oh well might as well make the most of it. Started my calling sequence off with cottontail in distress for 2 mins then 5 silence..did this 3-4 times...decided then to switch to jack in distress for 2 mins and 5 mins of silence...halfway through the second sequence of jack in distress i look to my left ..coyote came from somewhere behind the island and was now only 15-20 yards from me...he was fixated on the decoy i could see his face..his lips curled back, teeth showing, and his eyes went fierce...he started to run for the decoy...I couldn't keep up with him in the scope of the old SKS..so i thought for a second about how the western hunters say about stopping them with a dog bark..I yelled "WOOOF" ..He stopped...it was all i needed BAAMM..the hornady SSt tore through his right shoulder and exited through the other ..he dropped where he was with that look still on his face.

I continued to hunt this bog again for another week straight which i think was a mistake... there was a ton of scat around the whole bog..but after a while it all dried up and no new sign appeared ...somehow I think the coyotes are on to me..i went back to my first kill area today...only one set of tracks in the sand looks like the coyotes are just passing through now..I have no idea on how to find them in the area...people say use a siren at night...tried that ..the coyotes have never made a sound..I've been setting up on a logging cutover near the area ...and nothing ..I must be doing something wrong ..the coyotes are still in these areas.

What's up boy! Welcome to PM...

20 sum years ago... I used do sum killin with an SKS... Excuse the haircut... Unconventional like the weapon

I like the SKS as a medium range coyote gun...for some reason I I like a heavy rifle and the SKS is plenty heavy ..even its horrible trigger that it's supposed to have does not bother me..my only complaint is it's a bit short ..so I just added one of those butt stock shock absorbers to lengthen it a bit
More ..plus I'm sure the absorber helps with accuracy a tiny bit too ..as numerous people have
Stated ..it's not a long range gun but to tell the truth I'm not hunting fields ..I'm hunting small grassy bog areas or gravel supply pits which are mostly 50 yards up to 200 yards at most..now I have to say there are larger open areas to hunt but..there is no coyotes in those areas..so the old SKS with its limited range is almost perfect for this area ...but...here's the kick in the groin..the only way to use a high power rifle for coyote on the island of Newfoundland ..is if you have a big game license (moose, caribou, and black bear) you can hunt coyote till you fill your tag or the season ends..after that you can only use a .17 rem up to a .225 or some such caliber ..so I buy a bear license and hunt two months in spring
And two months in fall..costs me 33.50 ..now raised to 44.50 for a license ..pretty expensive just to use a SKS I know but my sks has killed more coyotes then my 22-250 has plus sks ammo 15.99 for a box of vs 22-250 ammo at 28.99+tax ..cheap stuff makes me prefer the old girl over the 22-250.
