SKS questions

I have couple questions for y'all:

#1: Does anyone here use an SKS for predator calling?
#2: If so, what scope do you use on it?
#3: Would I benefit from installing a synthetic stock,(such as a "Monte Carlo" style; or a "FiberForce" Dragonov style? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
#4: What, really, is the difference between Russian, Chinese & Yugo models? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Is it worth worrying about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Several years ago, I used one of the Chinese models, because it was cheap & I was on a tight budget. So I know the ballistics suck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif (I had a cheap 4x28 scope on it.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My oldest son is wanting to buy one now, so he can start hunting with me ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif). Like I was then, he is on a very tight budget, & doesn't want me to buy him a gun, instead. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

He is going to use it for coyotes & deer.

Cost wise, one of the best buys is the Yugo 59/66 (with the grenade launcher). Next down the line would be the Yugo M59 (same gun, no grendade launcher). Thereafter, the Romanians, Russians and Chinese run pretty much in the same ballpark.

The Russian, yugo M59, Romainian and Chinese are all very similar. Except, the Chinese usually has a rather short length of pull. Maybe that would be a good thing depending on the size of your boy?

There is also an Albanian version that you might come across that was fairly common a few years ago but harder to find now. The albanian is very similar to the M59 but has a different configuration in the handguard and is not a big deal.

The Yugo M59/66 is going to be the heaviest of the bunch and will have the longer stock since it has a thick rubber buttpad for launching grenades. You could remeove the grenade launcher and sights, but for the extra hassle you may as well just buy the Yugo M59 and be done with it.

A useful feature on the Yugo 59/66 for the reloader is that there is a gas block for grenade launching that allows shooting without ejecting the brass. Much easier than searching for the ejected brass!

My various family members and myself have tried various sights on the SKS's including scopes and red dots. I have a red dot on mine right now and it's fine. There is nothing wrong with the issue sights if you get a tool to adjust the front sight for windage and elevation. I have seen a rear sight advertised in Shotgun News that is an easy to attach fully adjustable aperture sight that might be the way to go. Here is a link to the MOJO SKS sight that is a no gunsmith replacement to the rear sight http://www.mojosights.com/ak47_sks.html The only real advantage with the mojo over the issue sight is it's easily adjusted and the aperture is a bit easier to work with than that tiny notch in the issue sight.

As far as the aftermarket stocks go, there is not much advantage to them over the wood stocks. They look kinda cool though and are not at all pricey. The monte carlo might make sighting through a scope a bit easier although my red dot sits high and is no problem with the issue wood.

Don't know what prices might run in your neighborhood, but the stuff that comes up in my area are way overpriced, IMO. Sometimes a good buy pops up but not that often. It's probably worth your while to apply for and get a C&R license for 30 bucks so you can buy from the wholesalers.

Best price I see on the 59/66 at the local gun shows is $180, but you can get a C&R and buy for this price http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Yugoslavian_Model_59_66_7_62x39_SKS_Rifle.html I'm seeing the M59s for 129 to 130 with some of the other wholesalers.
Here's the SOG listing on m59 and 59/66 http://www.southernohiogun.com/surplusrifles.html

I now have a Yugo with the grenade launcher that is quite well abused and used, but for what I bought it for it works fine. I would like to come across a "unissued" one to have also.
Several years ago when I was about 13-14 yrs old I bought one of the Norinco Chinese ones and put one of the simmons SKS scopes (4x28mm) with a B-square mount on it. After I shot it a little the scope mount got loose and I put some locktite on it and retightened. I never had a proplem with it again. Killed dozens of hogs with that gun. It would group about 2-3" at 100yds with cheap ammo, and around 1-2" with good ammo (If you could really call any 7.62x39 "Good") Remember that an SKS is a battle rifle, not a varmit gun or a benchrest rifle. It is like comparing a Volkswagon beetle (an old one) to a BMW.

If you look at the ballistics they are very similar to the 30-30 Winchester. Not the best, but it will get the job done plenty good. Alot of critters have been taken with a 30-30.

Go check out sksboards.com There is a TON of information on the sks on that website. By the way, I have one and it is a blast to shoot.
