Skull boiling question....

I have a couple of skulls that I want to boil this week and want to get some advise from others that have done it. When I have done it before I think that I have over cooked them and lost the nasal bones on whitetail in particular.

Should I boil at a lower temp for longer, or turn the fire up and let it roll?

How long do you let them cook?

How much meat do you remove before you boil?

Thanks

i just did my whitetail. didn't have water rolling but was bubbling good . i would take it out every 10 to 15 min and wire brush loose meat off. did this for about an hour and a half. hope this helps

I can tell you what not to do. I boiled a coyote skull, and laid it in the grass next to the patio to cool. In the mean time I started pressure washing the patio. I decided to try cleaning out the skull with a shot from the pressure washer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif It worked great, but I don't think that I will do it again. I had warm brains dripping off my clothes, face, and glases. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Threw this in a pot and boiled for a couple hours. Cleaned the remaining meat and boiled again with peroxide (About 25-30%) dried and that was it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Shot a couple coats of Krylon clear for a seal-coat, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have done approximately 40 skulls and have found apretty good method.

I scrape all the flesh I can and then boil for 30 minutes. Any longer and you'll start loosing nasal bones. I then take the powerwasher and blow everything clean, of course I've already removed the brains.

After cleaning, I use the VanDykes powdered peroxide and brush it on. It'll come out white as fresh snow...
