slick side vs standard

Well just out of curiosity, which do you believe to be better? A slick sided upper or the standard with dust cover and forward assist. I never use my forward assist (ever) and my dust cover is always open. So my last two have been built with slick side uppers. Lets here what you have to say.

All my other AR's have the assist and dust covers. But my grendel just has the dust cover. And like you guys have said, I don't ever use the FA on them at all. I guess if your in a battle, and the bolt gets dry from all the firing, thats where the FA would be a benefit. But for everyday hunting or range use, the slick side would do just fine, and save ya a few bucks.

I use the FA regularly in order to load the rifle quietly and insure against FTF's due to bolt not being in battery. Have never had a need for the FA otherwise.

Dust covers are great where I hunt in dry, dusty conditions.

Regards,
hm

I have both and the only real difference between the two is the standard put a small sent in the side of the cases when it ejects. I can use my finger to push the bolt forward by pushing on the groove cut in it for the dust cover latch (on a cold barrel of course). The only real draw back comes to light if you are a left handed shooter. The cases smack you in the face. If I had to pick only one, I would stock to the standard. Murphy gives me way to much attention when I don't need it.

A big +1 on the southpaws wanting the shell deflector. Especially if you use a bunch of different loads, as they all tend to eject brass at slightly different angles.
