sling swivel stud interference

Lodgepole

A minor irritation has showed up in my load development with the Ruger American. The stud is in the exact place on the rifle rest to cause poor shooting. I could remove it but was thinking it might be wiser to make a large smooth leather shim the same thickness as the stud with a hole in it to accept the stud,so the stud is flush with the for-end.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just curious how you came to this conclusion? What type of rest are you using that the rifle can't be move farther back off the stud??

I will assume that you want to slide your stock tip against the stop on your front rest. If that is the case, just remove it for range sessions and then put it back. No harm no foul unless you screw it in until it touches the barrel. Barrel contact No Bueno

I'd use a piece of delrin instead of leather, and profile it such it provides a level, wide, flat bottom, instead of the angled, curved, narrow stock bottom. In other words, strap on a proper rest rider.

A bench-rest shooter friend told me if the stud is forward of the rest and barely against it that as recoil occurs it will affect your group. Seems like the most comfortable and practical place for me to rest it so I am going to make the shim and always leave it laying on the rest. If I am removing the stud I will probably forget it and will need it plus the more it is removed the more likely the threads will loosen . Thanks for the suggestions
