Does anyone here REALLY know why gas pumps get slow dang slow sometimes? I stopped for fuel this morning and it took 10+ minutes to pump 11.35 gallons.....and then it just finally quit pumping! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have witnessed this on numerous occassions, and heard every theory under the sun, but does anyone REALLY know why they get so slow somwtimes? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Best guess...from years of working at convience stores, for whatever that's worth...the filters on the pumps need changed. That's usually what gets checked first when that problem happens.

Don't know why, but slow is better. Less fumes go back out of the tank while filling. Increases your mileage a little. Heard that from a refinery engineer.

I know that if there are numerous people using pumps at the same time, it will drain the electrical service a lot, depending what amperage the facility is set on... Same holds true during peak energy use times..

If it totally stopped, I'd say they have a pump problem...or the storage tank just went empty and if that was the case,,, you probably need a lot of Heet or to change your fuel filter soon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

This is a pretty large BP station (probably 24 pumps total) and 6-7 had a yellow OUT OF ORDER bag over the nozzle, so several had already quit.

I also thought that it might be a filter problem.

Bill, I HOPE I didn't get a load of water.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Sometimes it is a safety valve issue. Quite common around here. If you engage the nozzle before the pump builds pressure, the system thinks it has a leak.

The solution I have found is disengage the nozzle, wait ten seconds while the pump is still runing and then retry. Works here.

i was told that it's because some of the little trolls who turn the wheel underground, to pump the gas, have taken a break. don't know if it's true, i'm just telling you what i heard.

When I spend $50-$60 to fill the truck, I want to savor the experience! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Some stations do not have a pump in each station. There is a central pump for each grade and depending on how many stations are pumping that grade, it can get slower. But a minute per gallon is some real problem.

There may be more than one reason but this one sounds the most logical for what we encounter. I think my wife rushes it and when we're the only car at ten pumps it should not be that slow. Next time we will try stopping and restarting.

Around here they are worse in -10 degree weather and colder. But I find if they are runnning slow that vclicking em off and restarting tends to help most of the time. But not all the time. Right now we are at 3.32 a gallon regular unleaded. That is somehting I would rather not watch add up.
