Small rifle primers in a .40 S W?

Components have been hard to come buy in these parts. I just bought a new XDM .40 and can't find any small pistol primers. Word on the interwebz say you can substitute small rifle primers. Anyone know what the skinny is?

Pressures on the 40 are high enough as they are, I would not push the limit, especially on range pick up brass fired in glocks

Rifle primers are thicker also, may have some ignition issues on rifle primers...would not trust my life on them.

You don't have to worry about pressure problems, but the hard cups might make the cartridges un-reliable.

The last place I worked before going out on my own, bought 270,000 of CCI #82 primers.

They worked fine in Browning HPs and Berettas, but had misfires in Glocks and other hammerless pistols, because of the hard cups.

I've run close to 80K WSR's through custom 1911's in 40 S&W shooting IPSC matches. Never had a problem. The harder cups prevented primer flow at the old 175 power factor, with no ignition problems. I can think of a couple dozen top shooters that use nothing but small rifle primers in their 40's(1911's)
That being said, Glocks, XD's, etc may have ignition problems that the 1911's don't........

Many IPSC shooters have been using small rifle primers to make 'Major' for decades with zero issues. As long as your gun will ignite them, they'll work just fine.

I'd back off my load by 5% and work back up as pressure signs indicated.

well today I found a 1000 spp's at a reasonable price. I can now feed the XDM and the AR. Nice to know there is a little cross over just in case.
