Smith and Wesson 28-2

I got a guy wanting to trade me a Smith and Wesson 28-2 in .357 for my Ruger 22/45 but I know absolutely nothing about them. I do know they arent made anymore but not sure what they are worth or if they are even worth owning. If anyone has any information on them that they could share id greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Josh

Oh man- snap it up!

I got a 1955 5 screw M27 (pre model 27 actually) and a 70's made M28 and if there is a difference in the way that they shoot I sure cant tell it. Both are built (over built maybe!) on the big N frame and being 6 shot they really are massive for .357 calibers. I used to shoot metallic silhouette matches with a guy that could flat knock down those 200 meter steel rams with a cast 210 grain bullet from a 6" M28.

They don't make those M28 (also known as the Hiway Patrolman) Smiths anymore. If you don't grab that gun, I might send my grandson over there to dope slap you!

I really like the big N-frame .357's for shooting. The weight absorbs recoil and once you get that big cylinder turning in double action it is super smooth. However, I do not like packing them, now all that weight works against you. Kinda depends upon what you want the gun for.

Is your 22/45 a MK II or a MK III?

MK III i believe. Man thats bad. I cant even remember what it is for sure and I just bought it within the last year but I dont shoot it like I thought I would. Its blued with the 5.5" bull barrel.

I am asking because I wondered if it were a MK III if that loaded chamber indicator gave you any trouble? I hear the new ones don't have the super reliability record of the older MK I - MK II guns.

cathntr,
If I were you I'd take the trade.
You can always buy another 22/45, but you can't buy a Model 28.
Trades like this don't happen often.

We were issued 28s in about 1976 and as others have stated, they were a pain to carry in uniform...Those 6" swivel holsters were always getting crunched in the car seats with the seat belts...

We only kept them for a couple of years and replaced them with the 4" L frame .357s,,, but for a hunting weapon, they would be ideal...

I wish I had bought mine from the department in hindsight...

The load indicator hasnt gave me any trouble so far. Ive probably shot close to a half of a brick through it so far. I was waiting on pictures and some other information before making up my mind as I have had several other trade offers as well but whatever I do I need something that I know ill use. Ive bought too many guns thinking I needed them and had a use for them only to end up selling them bc they didnt get used enough. Im a firm believer that if you own it your might as well shoot it but I also try not to waste ammo so I need a purpose to shoot it. Dont get me wrong, ill take the Marlin .22 out every once in awhile and fire a couple hundred rounds through it but they are still fairly inexpensive to shoot compared to centerfire firearms. The only gun I have that dont have a specific purpose is a 1952 Mossberg Model 185 20 guage that my grandpa gave me when I was younger. So it dont get shot much but it is also the only gun I own that I can say without a doubt that it will never leave my possession other than to be handed down to one of my daughters or grand kids 50 years from now.

Make the trade...those 28's are getting harder to find everyday and going up in value. The Mark III...you will be lucky if you come close to getting your money back. As far as problems with the Mark III loaded chamber indicator, I have the Hunter model and have had absolutely none. Gun works perfect and is very accurate. Never jammed once. Would I trade it for a 28?? Depends on the condition but if the 28 was a nice one sure.

I carried one for awhile in th 70's and shot 200gr plain base cast bullets for Bowling Pin matches. It was a great revolver but too just too big to pack and picked up a heavy barrel 13 and had adjustable sights put on it.

If you don't make the trade, let me know who the guy is and I'll make a trade with him. I have a 4" Mod 28 and is an old favorite of mine.

I appreciate everyones input but I decided to go a different route and trade for something I would use more often. My wife needed a deer/coyote rifle and I needed an excuse to get a .22-250 to go with my .223 so I traded my cousin for a new Savage Edge. Let the beating begin. LOL

CAFR the guy is not a member here and only wants to deal locally or else I would. I asked him if he would even consider shipping and he said it wasnt worth the trouble.
