Smokeless Powder in a T/C Omega??

I was talking to a gun dealer and he claims he shoots smokeless powder in his Encore. I was wondering if smokeless would work in an Omega? Is it safe in either rifle?

wow, I bet that could be interesting if a person made even a small mistake on a charge. I blew one up when I was a kid by not getting the ball down tight on the powder. To say the least I was very lucky to be able to see yet and still alive. Pieces of the barrel blew threw a building I was sitting next to. I wouldn't mess with anything other than what is recommended.

I think I've read that smokeless powder has at least 50% more potential energy than black powder. Did he say what type of powder or how much? I think most smokeless powders burn much slower than black powder or its equivelants.

The only muzzloader Ive ever seen that recommends smokeless powder is the Savage. Ive had both an Encore and Omega and neither had anything in the manuals about using smokeless powder. I almost bought a savage just on account of that but I like my omega just fine.

The dealer you speak of is a first class idiot if hes shooting smokless powder in ANY muzzleloader not made for smokless. Savage makes the only smokless muzzleloader that I am aware of. DONT DO IT.
Your asking for a blown up gun at the very least...if you dont kill yourself or some bystander in the process also.

Some barrels like the stainless encore are rifle steel and can handle higher pressures, but few will recommend using smokeless. There is more information on this issue on muzzleloader web sites.

Hate to mention the dealer because he has been in business many years and is diffenitly not an idiot. He shoots about 50gr. of R-7 and a 300gr. bullet in his Encore. GRANTED, T/C DOES NOT recommend shooting smokeless powder in their rifles, I'm just saying HE does in his. I haven't tryed and probably won't, but I figured someone here has and either won't say or haven't said they have tried it.

I use a Savage.
But the is 2 guys at the range that use smokeless in there encores.
They have for years with no problems.
Granted they are not shooting 2600 fps like me but still better then black powder.

This is why I dont go to public ranges, dont want to wind up next to some know it all idiot that does crap like this...especially when hes pulling the trigger. There are some people who, no matter how much information is available, will always have the "I know what I'm doing...trust me." mentality.
To these people I say...pour that smokeless with gusto my friend...just dont go spreading your stupidity around by telling others it's OK for them to do it too.

I hate to break it to you psycodog but your dealer friend is definitly or diffenitly an idiot if he is recommending that his clients use smokeless in a firearm made for BP.Please remember clearly what he said to you so that you can repeat it in front of a jury for the poor fatherless person who followed his advice. Again, please, if you do try this let me know I'll send you your sign.

youngdon- You can keep your sign, you'll probably need it yourself some day. I didn't say he was recommending using it. I said HE used it. I also said that I doubted I would ever try it myself, if YOU took the time reading instead of passing out your signs. Maybe you should back up a few posts and re-read. I just asked if anyone ever tried smokeless in a T/C Omega.

youngdon, i believe BrentWin may have simply been saying that this guy was about to evolve himself out of the equation!

there are SAFE ways to shoot smokeless powder in a muzzle loader. Usually this results in performance that is below what black powder loads give.

Heres the big thing, theres an issue with gas cutting/eroding everytime you trigger off. Just because it doesnt blow up the first, second or third time doesnt mean its not going to ever. It will, just give it time.

Absolutely not

Savage is the only MZ manufacture that has a design that will withstand constant shooting of smokeless powder

no other manufacture has build to this spec and probably won't. there is no advantage to shooting smokeless powder in a MZ.

Besides it is illegal to use here so I guess it is a moot point

I wouldn't say there are No Advatages to shooting smokeless in a MZ. Last week I took my Savage to the range for her maiden voyage shot thirty rounds without cleaning. If everything else was equal that alone would be enough for me. I won't argue if one is better than the other I'll just say there are some significant differences.

There is another possibility about the original post. Pac-Nor makes aftermarket barrels that use the Savage breechplug and are rated for Smokeless powders. A lot of guys are replacing their 10ML barrels with them in .45 and .40 calibers and shooting without sabots. These barrels can be ordered in just about any profile and guys are using them to make ML's based on popular bolt action guns like the Rem 700's. It wouldn't be hard to fit one of the barrels to an Encore and have it safe to shoot Smokeless. If thats what the guy is doing he's still an idiot by not clearly stating it and giving somebody the idea that it is OK to do it in a stock Encore.

Sorry for rambling.
peace.

LOL!!!!!!
Thats a good one.

No cleaninga and groups great at 300 yds.

And yes there is a company that makes smokeless Encore muzzle loader barrels.

Do a search on the net and you will find alot of people are doing it.
The steel used in these barrels is the same steel used in rifle barrels.
