smokers and sentkiller

i smoke. i try to mask it as much as possible. i'll have a smoke after i finish a stand. then i'll spray my clothes down with scent killer, hat, gloves, etc. I use some skin lotion by Dead Down Wind for my face and hands. It's some pretty good stuff and goes along way toward freshing up. But I don't ignore the wind. I enter my hunting areas with the wind to my face, try to set up on a cross wind, or use my ecaller and set up downwind. I mist my stand area and caller/decoy area with fox, bobcat and rabbit urine. Wear rubber boots.

if you pay attention to the wind you can still be successful. i'm having a decent year here in alabama. 4 yotes and a nice gray fox so far. i've been busted several times for moving, but i usually don't see the ones that wind me i guess.

I try to chew instead of smoking when calling but by mid day I just really want a smoke. I take off my top layer shirt and try to keep the smoke off of me as much as possible by moving around while smoking. I spray down every few stands with the dirt smelling scent cover and use fox pee on my boots. I'll rub some of the scent killer on my hands and hope I don't get busted.

Here's my take. They will smell you whether you smoke or not. I've shot many yotes with a lit cigar at my stand. I used to do the scent killer but too much of a pain. Watch the wind carefully whether you smoke or not and you'll be fine.

They will smell you regardless. Thats a fact.

I thought I was the only person smoking cigars on stand. If anything, a good cigar might be a cover scent. I don't believe any smell is more frightening to a predator than the funky scent of humans.

I smoke. And I smoke alot. Usually I stop the truck for an area I want to stand and use the end of my cigarette to get an idea of what the wind is doing. Sometimes even finish it while starting to head out. I don't use scent controls. They'll still smell me despite cigarette smoke and I don't think it's known to travel upwind.

My thoughts on cover scent are the same for coyote or deer. It don't matter what you put on or wear, they are going to smell you. If they get downwind and can smell the cigarette smoke they can smell you, your breath, your hat, the oil you stepped in at the gas station, the oil in your gun, dollar bills in your wallet, your dogs slobber on your shoe strings, the breakfast burrito vapor you passed 20 minutes ago, etc. etc. Cover scents are a gimmick, nothing more. They might lessen the smells but they can't get them all. All an animal needs is a few particles of scent and they have you nailed.

Hunt the wind and don't worry about it. I've killed some of my biggest deer with a cig hanging out of my mouth (back when I smoked)

How the heck does a coyote know to be afraid of tobacco smoke? I guess if they were raised around a house full of smokers, they might make the connection.

I've never quite understood that concept. If they're in position to smell the smoke, they'll smell your BO, rifle solvent and Head and Shoulders shampoo, too.

I don't smoke on a stand, either, but I have serious doubts it improves my chances of calling in critters.

What Evil said.. Fires, smoke happen all the time in the forest. I doubt that a Coyote will discern the difference. Maybe someone can capitolize on a Scent killing Cigarett.

I smoked a full pack on the drive from North to South to see alphayote, smoked half a pack while I was there, and one after every stand. Keep the wind in your face and you'll be fine I think...

I smoked my Swisher Sweets while deer hunting, and a whitetail asked me to please smoke a pack of coyotes today. I thought, naaah and smoke him and his brother later.

In all seriousness, I really don't think smoking bothers them as already stated. Keep the wind in your face, and the smoke blowing away from the direction your shooting from.
