Snake Skin Camo for guns help

I have recently been looking at covering up my gun with some camo. The obvious things I am not willing to do are paint my rifle, or use a tape that leaves the tack behind when you peal it off. I found that Cabela's sells a Cabela's Snake Skin Gun Camo for guns that you put on and heat shrink to your gun using a hair dryer. Have any of you out there tried this? If so what are you thoughts on it? Once it has shrunk to your gun does it still have some "play" in it - by play do you feel the gun sliding underneath it? Also is the finish on it matte? Does it offer good grip? Help with any of these question would be great.

The snake skin stuff is durable, but is a pain in the butt to put on and take off. Also you have to be concerned about moisture and condensation getting under it and rusting your gun. Luckily there is an easier way.

Cabela'a sells another product called Camo Form. If you have ever seen vet wrap that vets use to wrap horses legs, it is essentially the same thing. It's the same thing they use to wrap around your arm when you donate blood. It only adheres to itself and leaves no sticky residue behind. It's available in Shadow Grass, Max 4, and maybe a few others. Best part is if you want snow camo, you can go to the vet store, or feed store, and buy the plain white vet wrap for like 3 bucks for a huge roll. More than enough to cover all of your guns multiple times over. Also you can take if off to clean your gun, and reapply to your gun when you are done. Hope this helps.

Kyle, I had not thought about the moisture factor in this equation! Now that I think about it - that could be a huge issue. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have seen the Camo Form at my local Cabela's as well as online. I guess that will probably be my option moving forward. Thanks for the heads up! Cheers.

if you live near an animal supply store try vet wrap made by 3m. it's primary purpose is for wrapping horses legs. it has no gooey adhesive, it adheres to itself, is waterproof. comes in a zillion colors and is cheap. it's $3 for five yards. you can take it of your piece and never know you had it on.

also great as an emergency bandage in the field should you injure yourself. it's in my first aid kit.

I actually just ordered a roll of that Camo Form from Cabelas. I got the Mossy Oak Brush pattern. Put it on my rifle last night. One roll covered my barrel, scope, and most of the stock. It looks really good and seems durable and tight. I am going to test it out this weekend when I am calling. I will let you know how it works.

Billyd, the horse wrap "white" works awsome for snow camo used it the last two years with no reidue. I originaly came accross this stuff from my vet. I had a Doberman that was attacked by a black bear and was given some by the vet for leg wrapping. this stuff saved my rifles on my first plane ride out to dry states predator hunting. I wrapped around both my scopes and the rest of the guns. Man that stuff is a lifesaver when transporting 2 guns in the same case. I normaly use camo tape on all my guns and when i take it off i use rubbing alcohal or bug and tar remover.

gundog,

The snake skin won't actually go into cracks and checkering. It's a faily thick plastic-like material that only covers over the surface (like an adhesive tape would). After you apply it you are left with a smooth plastic finish on the outside of your stock/barrel.

Well guys I used the Camo Form from Cabelas in Mossy Oak Brush this weekend on a coyote hunt. I think it worked nicely. It only sticks to itself and doesn't leave any residue. We hunted hard for one whole day (sunup to sundown) and it didn't move/bunch up on me. On the last stand of the day I laid my rifle in the grass and walked a ways away and thought it broke up the shape pretty well. One roll cost 12 bucks and it covered most of my gun and scope (I left the action area of my bolt alone because of the moving parts. Oh and we had a successful hunt...6 coyotes in one day.
