Soft case?

For years I've used the plain Jane soft cases that Wally World and other box stores carry. Since I mostly hunt with wood and blue it seems I remember reading about having firearms stored in soft cases for extended periods can cause rust because they hold moisture? Any more on this? What soft cases should I be looking at and what material?

That is true, they can hold moisture. I never store any gun in a case, the case can't breath. I only have one soft case which is probably 40 years old, and very seldom sees use. I'm sure could google it. A hard case is probably a better option all around though.

Here Kitty Kitty

Also , don't store guns in cases (hard or soft) that have foam interiors. They can also promote corrosion. When storing firearms, I use those breathable silicone treated "gun socks". I think mine are from Midway.

My ex had a really old Colt pistol that her dad gave her. I don't even remember how long she had it. She got it out one day to show me and the soft pistol case had almost grown to the pistol. Needless to say, the finish was ruined. I did my best to remove the rust but the finish was trashed. The gun still functions and now is only a shooter and the value is gone. None of my firearms stay in any kind of case for long periods of time.

You should be OK there. I usually, and you probably do to, keep them oiled/cleaned, so that should be good. I just meant for months at a time. You can always open the case and wipe them down. I just wouldn't go looooooooong periods of time in a case.

I figured as much seeing as I haven't had a problem ever but figured there may be a case out there that was nicer than the Walmart junk that could minimize it should the situation occur.

Lots of nice cases out there. Look at Pelican. Really nice! But, I got off track, you asked about a soft case. You might look at MidWay and see what ol' Larry has to offer.

Gary, I used soft cases for transporting and relatively short-term storage of some really nice wood/blue rifles. I never had even a single spot of rust on any of them.

I always bought the padded cases from Wally World that zipped open for the full length. I would zip them open all the way and give them a spray of Birchwood Casey Sheath and let it dry. The rifles always went into the case bone dry and wiped down with a shop cloth sprayed with the Sheath.

Yeah, I would have had no problem keeping a nice Cooper or Anschutz in a soft case for a few months as long as they went into the case wiped down and dry.
Now, on the other hand, I saw a brand new 870 totally crusted with rust after a guy got it wet in a rain storm and stuck it in a soft case and threw it in the trunk of his car for a
couple of months.

Just a FYI--
Sheath is now sold under the BC brand name of "Barricade".

I could go for a Jackson squirrel rifle one day..............one day. I'll drool until then.
