Soft point accuracy

I am shooting speer 55 grain soft points out of my 223. I am reloading and using 27 grains of varget with it. At 100 yds with a four shot group I got .9 moa. Would going to a v-max or a HPMK help very much as far as accuracy? I thought I heard that a soft point wasn't as accurate as the v-max of HPMK. I would like to tighten up my shot group to a .5 or so at 100 yds. I would also want this bullet to kill coyotes as well as shoot a tight group.
Thank you

I have found (just my personal experience) that soft points are just as accurate as any other bullet made. The biggest determining factor is the specific rifle. One rifle shoots V max better than HP, where the next rifle (same brand and cal.) is just the opposite. Your best be is to try as many types as you can until you find the performance you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

The Speer bullets aren't going to be as consistent as, say, Sierras.

But I do agree with BangFlop--soft points can be extremely accurate.

These are Sierra Gameking 55's at a little over 300 yards:

There are DEFINITELY rifles out there that prefer soft points to any of the latest high-tech missile offerings, whether it seems to make sense or not. I tried Accubonds recently in my pre-64 M70 30-06. A load using R-19 that I figured would drive nails, as usual. It didn't. My load using good old Speer hot-cors still out shot it. This is but one example, I could give you many more---2MG

Seirra 50gr Semi-pointed bullets shoot best out of my .223. An old timer tipped off on them said he used to shoot benchrest with a .222 and they were great. He was right.

The plastic tip bullets will usually give a flatter trajectory at long range than the standard bulllets, but not one of my rifles shoot as well with them as the old standbys. Not much difference, but enough t0 alter "bragging rights" with the buddies.
