this will be my first year at trapping and i just wanting to know what are the best traps for coyotes and bobcats ? what are the best lures ? any other advice ya'll can give . my money is tight so i cant afford the high priced traps ... lol .

MB550 in my opinion are awesome yote and bobcat traps. There is no "best" lure... try a few and find which ones you like best. I like almost every lire mad by Cavens.

Check out www.TrapperMan.com , They help you a ton! Check out the Archives while your there.

Also, for trapping supplies got to Minnesota Trapline Products - www.minntrapprod.com Tim Caven is a wonderful man to deal with!

Also if money is tight think about snares, very easy set ups contact thesnareshop.com and tell them what state you are from and they will get what you need. And about lures and baits anything should work but ask around locally in your area and see what other trappers are having luck with.

I use Bridger #3 for cats and coyotes, modified, base plated, four coiled, stop shock spring, and laminated with 1/4" round rod. Abot 140$ before modifications.

thanks for all the info . as for snares in SC the yare legal but for water use only dont know why but thats how the dnr does here ... lol .

For the size of coyotes in your area and your cats I would go with bridger #2's offset and modified the good thing is you can buy used and save some $$$$$$. I would also switch them in time to PIT pans better pan tension and more constant, but I would start off with a few used traps and see how well you like it.

MB550's are too much for what you get, like Minn trap prod but the dog can be easyily bent and the back frame not as thick as a bridger. Cast jaws are nice but add any chain to them and your going to have some damage. Plus jaw spread IMO too small for coyotes I like a larger kill area.

guys remember he has a inside jaw spread limit of 5 3/4 inches.

I would go with the Montana Specials #3's, the are already made to handle coyotes and cats without modifying, and they are legal in your state as they are only 5.5 inside spread.

bridger 2's would fit the bill as they have a 5 5/8" jaw spread. The montana trap I don't like the welded in lugs I like a true offset jaw, but each to his own. At the NTA convention I saw some used 2 bridger modifieds for 13.00 each. They where in good shape. Plus as a beginner dog on easier to adjust pan tension than dogless IMO.

Each to his own.

the Montana is the easiest to adjust the pan and once its down its down. no need to keep doing it.

the Montana comes with very easy instructions on how to adjust the pan, plus you don't need to do all the mods to them, as they are strong enough. heck for that matter a Duke 1 3/4 will hold a yote. with out the mods, if the traps are checked every 24 hours like the laws say.

but like you said, each to their own.

wow, they don't hand out much room to begin with do they?

Duke #2 are 5.5 are about 7.75 each.
You don't have to modify dukes to work, but I would.
To adjust pan tentions is fairly simple..imo.

I agree with ADC I'd prefer a true offset jaw & the smaller of a trap you go the less room you have.
It's fun to up the challenge though when you've had a while at doing it.

Lures, you need to try different ones to see what your getting in your area, I have one I'll use one yr and the next the same lure won't do me a bit of good.
