I like making stuff myself and can make it the way I want it. I can built it stronger and much cheaper.
These mounts were made with stuff around the house with the main item being the high density foam packing material. I made this gun box I call HMS or Horizontal Mounting System. I can store all kinds of stuff in here as well as my fishing poles. I modeled it after this cheaply made but expensive mount. The seat folds down and you would never know it was there. Gun scopes clear the seat too. It was made for traditional long guns but my AR will fit there too.
A year later I got my AR and wanted a mount up front. It would make it a lot easier, quieter and much quicker for the run and gun style of hunting I do around here. I looked at a lot of gun mounts for the front and most required drilling the floor board and I just don't like that so I designed one myself with no holes in the floor boards.
I call this one the VMS or vertical mounting system. The top mount I designed and cut using 3/4" oak utilizing a small bungee cord and some felt material. The cord is held in place utilizing a jam screw and when and if the cord wears out it can easily be replaced. The mount is mounted at an angle to grip the gun in its natural balanced position. The lower portion of the mount is the same packing material that is held my the rim of my cup holder along with some rugged and very wide industrial strength Velcro. This mount is not going anywhere. The Velcro keeps it in position and the foam can be removed if I want to. The slots on top are for a couple 5 round magazines. I have been off road with this and it held up ok. The gun is straight up and balanced placing the full weight of the gun on the lower pad while the upper mount simply holds the top in place. While the gun is in the holder I do loose access to my ashtray which is fine cause I don't smoke. I also loose One 12v outlet but have another to the left. TOTAL COST: I'm not completely sure as most everything was laying around my house.....$20 bucks....maybe....for both mounts! The truck is an '03 Chevy Silverado. Thanks for looking and hope this helps someone.
