For you South Dakota boys, can you recommend a good gunsmith here in SD? I am particularly looking for one that is competent in performing an Ackley Improved Conversion. Thanks!
Matt at Teton River Traders in Ft. Pierre has built 4 for me and the last one was a 22-250AI and they have all been excellent shooters and very resonable in price
ksdogman beat me to it. I was going to say Matt as well. I haven't had him do a full on build for me, but he has done some other work and it has been top notch.
Look up Chad Dixon or Google longriflesinc. He is in Sturgis next to Corbon. He builds some really high end stuff. Used to manage Nesika and Dakota arms before he went over to the sandbox. Has been back for quite a while now and is making some killer rifles. Easy guy to talk with and you can stop by his shop and see one of the most modern gunshops you will ever see. Whoever you choose make sure you do your homework as there are quite a few gun plumbers out there that can wreck a good rifle and charge you a good price to do it.
My brother gets his guns and some gunsmithing done here as well as an old friend of mine. good, solid reputation. i got work done there back when i still lived in SD. I go back every year and my first stop off there is Gary's.
I guess they have one in Winner SD too, havent been there even though i go through to get home.

I wouldn't use Gary's. They'll make you buy the reamer if they don't have it. I talked to them about doing a 243AI and they said "we'll do it if you buy the reamer".
Chad Dixon is the way to go in SD, and he's working on being the go to guy in the midwest.

Chad is a great guy on top of being a great smith. He is very easy to talk to and more than happy to help a guy out. Good smiths and good work do not come easy but no one wants to have to re-do there custom guns. I have seen some "high end" guns from smiths who came highly recommended in Chads shop so he could fix the work of other smiths. No matter who you use, make sure to do your homework.
Also what film work are you going to add in. It doesnt by chance involve a certain rifle of his and an airplane does it?
Thanks a bunch for all your advice, fellas! It seems Chad Dixon is the current vote getter right now. I checked his website, and WOW! The guns he puts together sure are pretty.
I had seen Teton River's website also, so it is good to hear that Matt comes recommended, as well.
I will definately have to give these two guys a call and see what they can offer. Thanks alot!

LOL, no airplanes involved although he does have some nice RC's there in his shop... we will be releasing more info about the video as filming progresses... we are going to be featuring it the special features of our next DVD, lets just say it involves some expensive equipment, and the outcome will be a bad a$$ build!!!
Another person you may want to check out is Devin Sinner of Sin Arms. He works a full time job other than gunsmithing so he is best to get a hold of in the evenings. I had him making a savage pre-fit for me out of a McGowen barrel. McGowen was screwing around with him on getting him the barrel. Since I had to wait so long he ordered me up a shilen blank and is doing the chambering and threading for free and only charging me for the cost of the barrel blank. That is what I call customer service.
I haven't received anything from him yet but he gets rave reviews over at savageshooters. He also does a lot of work on Howa actions, which many smiths don't do.
You can go over to Snipershide and look in the gunsmithing section and see some of Chads builds. He documents a lot of them for his clients. He uses CNC equipment and holds some pretty amazing tolerances not to mention every gun we have had him put together shoots great.
I can recommend Kyle Christians in Harrisburg. He has done alot of work for me and I've been happy. He used to smith at Scheel and is now out on his own.
Also Gary's doesn't build rifles in house anymore. One of there smiths Steve, Brandon SD(and not the owner Steve)has a shop at home and does nice work. I know several guys at our BR club that shoot his stuff, and he built me a nice LW 260 4 years back.
Chad Dixon is also great. I had some action work done by him and it was 1st rate. He knocked it out in a week while I was in the Hills cat hunting, so I wouldn't have to have it shipped.
We have a few good smiths in SD, and Jerry Simensma and Stan Ware just over into MN.
I could be wrong but I don't this Bob Winters is still Smithing. To bad he could build a pretty rifle.
