Southeast PA Red Fox...A Swing and a Miss!

Well, I went on my first night hunt ever.

Called in a red fox with a whistle call. He took me by complete surprise. He came running 20 minutes (3rd call sequence) from my left side out of a hedgerow and stopped 15 feet from my boots!!!! With the snow as a backdrop I swung my barrel and popped a shot with my scattergun, but by that time he was on a full run at 30 yards...I was totally unprepared for a galloping fox at 10pm! I was barely able to lift my 500,000CP light and gun quick enough.

I wish I had a buddy with me to hold the light!!

This night stuff is exciting and quick! Thanks to my PredatorMaster friends for giving me all the tips.

hello arrowheader i'm from southeast pa also the collegeville area .Been hunting fox around here for about 7 years now .I know it's hard to shoot at night by yourself been there .well glad you had some luck on your first night hunt. It gets alot easier with time.

Arrowheader: Your gone about it a little wrong. It is easier by yourself. Your 500,000 light is major overkill.
All you need is a Wheat type or mine type light.
Look for Nightlight company on the web.
The object is less light and see the eyes.
I use a light with an amber color cover.
Use the outer rim of the light and shine from left to right as your calling.I keep the light head between my thum and index finger.I keep the light at waste levil and move left to right towards the direction I expect the critter to come from. I keep my shotgun faceing up (vertical). If you keep the light in front of you, you are invisible to the animal!!
LOOK FOR THE EYES!
When the critter gets close eknuff, I lower the gun to the light I get down on the shotgun put my eye on the fox's eye and SPANK him.
Hell, Just writing this paragraph just put me in the mood to go hunting.

I guess I bunted one tonight. I called in a fox after only a minute on the Faulks. Hit him high with the 12 gauge, he left blood so were going to try and catch up with him in a few minutes. The suspense is just killing me. Hope we find him.

Long Ranger: Post how you made out. I did the same thing to many times, thats why I changed my approach. I also have a red illuminated paint on the BB at the end of my shotgun.
Red on red,let er fly.

Long ranger had the same thing happen to me many times .I went out and got a bushnell holosight has not happen again. They are a little costly but well worth it.Mounted it on my 835 haven't lost one scents . web page this is the site. good luck.Arrowheader Predator spanker is right light is way to bright i use a little hand helded flash light .lights there eyes up 150 yards away with no problem .I used to use a 500,000 light with a big battery back a lot to carry if you have to walk alot.Smaller light less noise you make walking in and out with ever thing you have to carry.less time make sure everthing works more hunting time.Don't have to charge that battery pack up all the time .

Once again I have taken the advice of my Pennsylvania Predator Brothers!!! I now have myself a Koehler 5100 Wheat Light with Red and Amber lens covers. I am gonna get back at those reds tomorrow AM. Actually, I have called (2) reds last year in the middle of the afternoon in BLAZE ORANGE!!!! Dropped one of them with a .22.

If any of you guys live near Downingtown, PA and want a buddy to join you before the season closes, let's talk it over. Send me an email at fishdecoys@hotmail.com if you want to get together for a couple of night hunts on state land or other.
