Sp vs Hp Bullets For Coyotes

Which is your preferred bullet for coyote hunting, Hp or Sp? I've heard good things about both, but i'm not sure how much of difference there is on the target. I'm either going to start using the 55 gr sp or 55 gr hp bullets from Midsouth in my AR. I used to use the 53 gr Vmax but I'm just going to use them on smaller critters now.

I would recommend the SPs as they already have a larger opening and sometimes a small HP won't open up as quickly as a SP. I'm a big fan of the 60gr V-Max or Hornady 60gr SP for coyotes in the .223.

I'm assuming he meant the opening in the copper jacket.

It may be more an issue of bullet makeup, and how ‘frangible’ they are constructed. Not all SPs or HPs will have the same opening characteristics. I’d think either would be fine, 55 grains out of a 223. Then one can talk about shot placement.

My favorite bullet for short range Coyote shooting is the Sierra #1390. It is a hollow point.

Poor B.C. offset by excellent terminal characteristics when fired at AR15 velocities at close range. (80 -150 yards)

It is a similar design to the 52 grain Sierra HPBT Match King. Accuracy is real close to the same.

For other disciplines or shooting a tad bit farther, SP's and the usual variety of poly tip wonder bullets.

I have had good results with Sierra 75 gr. Hollow points in my 6x45 AR. With a 223 I use 60 gr. V-Max that drops 'em.

I haven't had good luck with SP's most always exit(Hornady, Sierra, Rem) and I have gotten some really large exits, softball plus sized.

My go to bullets are the 40gr NBT in my 22-204 at close to 4000fps, no splashes and no exits, it is my favorite in this cartridge for pelt hunting.

For every other rifle 222 Rem, 5.6x50R Mag and 22-250 it is the Speer 52gr FB HPs with the same results as the 40gr Nosler, velocity doesn't seem to effect how it performs.

I've had luck with the 50gr NBT in a 223 but it is a fairly mild load and that was 20 yrs ago I don't shoot a 223 anymore, just re-chamber them to 22-204(223 Ai equivalent with no fire forming needed)

I like hollow points but usually use something with a plastic tip. One coyote got killed with a SP last year and it blew out a softball on the other side with my 22-250. Musta hit a bone...

Sierra #1365 is a 55 gr bullet that would be hard to beat. In my gun they are more accurate and are more of a big game type bullet than a varmint bullet. I have tried hornady 55 gr sp but they just didn't shoot that well. When I miss it should be because I made a bad shot not because the bullet wasn't up to the task. JMHO

Correct, it is equivalent to a 222 Rem. Mag. IMPROVED. Nice wildcat, readily available brass, a little more capacity than a 223 AI, off the shelf dies and no fireforming.

Those Midway bullets do the job. They are actually Nosler or Sierra anyway. The 55 gr bullets do a job on Yotes. Good luck

Tom
