Speedmaster trigger

I'd been keeping my open for a Remington 552 Speedmaster for a while. Well my wife and son got me a used one for my birthday. Must have been somebodies truck gun as it had a ton of grime and a few scratches on the receiver. After a thorough cleaning I took it out to see if it would shoot, I put five rounds in and darn near dislocated my finger. I don't yet have a trigger pull gauge (have to get one) but have to think it is close to double digits. Is there somewhere I can send the trigger to lighten it up a bit or even something I can do? Thanks, Dave.

Boy Rusty your not getting much response here. Any trigger can be honed and worked on. There are several ways to make a trigger lighter. Spring replacement, making the contact surfaces smoother (polishing) and making the contact surfaces smaller so there is less physical movement between the trigger and the sear.

On some guns this is pretty easy on some pretty hard. I've not done a Speedmaster trigger job so would refer you to a gunsmith for safety sakes.

You might go over to Rimfire Central where folks talk about nothing but rimfire rifles and ask this same question. Here is the link.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I pulled the trigger last night and I think I can hone it a little but my biggest concern is of course a safety issue. I'll try over a rimfire central too. Thanks, Dave

If I remember right, That is the same trigger that is in the centerfire pumps and autos as well as the 870 shotguns. My very first recommendation is to remove the assembly and clean it very well with carb cleaner and spray with a dry lube. This reduces viscosity friction due to oil getting thick when it is cold or dirty. Next, you can find a lighter spring to replace the one that holds the trigger. If you find one with about 1/2 the rate of the original you will still be very safe. Look at stainless steel springs if they are available in your local stores because they are typically lighter in pressure. This alone got the trigger in my older 742 down to 4 lbs without sacrificing any safety. Add a trigger shoe if you want a lighter feel as well.

Good luck

Thanks BLUE CAN, When I did a search I was sometimes getting links to Brownells for parts for the 870 and other Rem guns.
That explains that. Thanks again.
