I got a box of 180 gr Speer hot-core bullets for my 300 WSM. My hunting bullets are the Barnes 168 gr TTSX and will be using the Speer's for target practice due to the cost of the Barnes. Anyone have any luck loading these? I'm hopeing to load some up after I get back from Montana.

Sorry, I've no experience reloading for a 300WSM. Largest cartridge I reload is a 30-06 and around 6 cartridges that are smaller.

However, I've have tried various caliber Speer bullets in my cartridges. I've commented about speer bullets to my some of my fellow ranges members that reload, asking their opinion/success with them. Basically we have the same opinion. Speer may be good hunting bullets, but none of us have had much luck with Speer bullets when it comes to accuracy from benchrest. In other words, its not a brand we prefer to use when shooting for accuracy.

I have loaded plenty of the Hot-Cors, but not 180s. All 165s.

I used to load Grand Slam 180s back in the day with Win 760.

Aww heck. For some reason I thought we were discussing 30-06 loads

Guess I have nothing left to add. Never loaded them in the 300WSM. IMO, not best bullet for that cartridge anyway........

Hi I haven't loaded for a 30 cal using them I have for a 25/05 and I love them on deer 100 gr. I bought 500 same lot # off here shipped to me for 100..00 I am loading 180 gr SST in my 300 wby. Sorry I wasn't any help.

I'm gonna load 15 rounds up with different powder charges and see what happens. I'm just using these for practice rounds given how much the Barnes cost per a box.

Loaded some Speer 165's in one of my .300 WM. Shot fine and killed deer DRT. Just for shooting deer they are fine. If you want small groups shoot a match bullet. They shoot great out of my .308 and .30/06. I don't believe you have to shoot a premium bullet to kill a deer or thin skinned animal. For what you are going to do with them I would say fire away(Practice) . Cheaper than Barnes and still shoot good. Don't think if you shot a deer with the Speer you would notice any difference between them and Barnes. Good Luck to you.

One of the guys I hunt with uses sierra match bullets for practice I may get a Handful of em to try and see how they shoot too.
