Sporterized Mosin-Nagant owner question?

I've owned a Finnish M39 Mosin-Nagant and it shot 180gr. S&B ammo in a 1 1/4" group at 100 yards with open sights. I would imagine with a scope and some good reloads, that 1/2" groups wouldn't be out of the question.

Just the same, I'd like to hear from those of you that have scoped and reload for your Mosin-Nagant.

* What's the accuracy groups at xxx yards?
* What bullet size/weight are you reloading?
* Do you hunt with this rifle?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

With that kind of accuracy with open sights, i'd say you could easily get 1/2" or under with a good scope and QUALITY mount. Rock Solid Ind. makes a great 3 screw mount that really is solid.

Another great add on is the Timney trigger. It does require inletting and you better have a steady hand if you want to do it right.

1941 m9130 with Rock solid ind mount. Stock was drilled and aluminum pillars installed, bedded stock with acraglass, konuspro 6-24x50 scope, timney trigger, steel Burris ring.

I had a nice sporter I built a few years ago, but sold it last year. I would load Mexican Match ammo by pulling the bullets from the spam can stuff, re-weigh the powder, and press in Hornady 123gr soft points for plinking. Worked well on pigs too. I was going to try some other loads with new brass and 175gr sierras, but never got around to it. It shot right about 1 MOA with the Mexi-Match ammo, and about 1.5 MOA with straight surplus ammo.
With the 123gr bullets, they would drop off pretty quick after 400yds. 500yd groups were nothing to brag about.

My advice, appreciate it for what it is. Don't go bubba'ing it up by drilling a bunch of holes in it. If you just want a paper puncher, there are many commercial rifles available with no collector value.

mosin nagant runs 135-200, theres no big value to be had unless its a very rare version and those rarely pop up into the market.

You can easily build a tasteful looking mosin nagant with a scope. We left ours pretty much original looking but upgraded with the scope and trigger.

3 holes and you have a solid scope mount, not some bubba hose clamp style mount.

That's what my Dad said about his Swedish carbine that he cut down and scoped up after paying $24.95 w/ 2 boxes of ammo an@ Monkey Wards for it back in the early 1960's. It's about a $1200 gun now in good ORIGINAL condition. A Savage Axis runs about $300-325 OTD at Walmart now, and shoots well.

Which shoots better and switches calibers better than most Mosins.

And, for the record, I do understand the attractiveness of the Mosin.

with a 7.62x54 which is basically a russian 30-06, how many calibers does one need?

You can really get the mosins shooting holes through holes but the surplus ammo works so well.
