Spotting Scope Help

I have a Redding Spotting Scope that I have used for about 20 years and I think it's time for something a little better. I do alot of shooting with the varmint class rifles and need something that I can see .17 to .22 cal. holes in the black at 100 yards. My old Redding is pretty marginal. Is there anything out there for under $500 that will help these old eyes. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

I just bought the Leopold Sequoia(??) for like $269. It is up to a 45 power. I can see 223 holes at 100 pretty well. Burris also makes a scope for 300 or so dollars that was very comparible. It works well when looking for groups, but if your talking one hole or all 3 touching, it will be hard to distinguish the fine details.

I bought this last Fall for spot hunting, works great. More then enough, for what your looking for. I can make out an individual blade of grass. At close to 300yrds away, when the Sun is out.

Celestron 20-60x80mm. It's 19" long. Cost me around $185.00.
At the time, I bought it. The company, had a lifetime warranty running, for the origional owner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I use a B&L Elite 15x45 and it is one of the best spotting scopes i have used. You can find good deals on these on E-Bay if you keep checking. If you use one of these i think you will be very pleased. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought the exact scope Kirby bought for the same price, I think it was from Adorama. It is an excellent scope and at a very reasonable price.

I just picked up a Bushnell Legend spotting scope 15 x 60 x 60mm complete with fullsize tripod and padded cover and travel case, The Legend has fully multi coated lenses and the rain guard coating. The image is suprisingly sharp compared to the spotting scope I bought 40yrs ago. The price was $259.00 shipped from Camaraland.

www.OpticsPlanet.com has this scope for $189.00 with free shipping. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You should not need more than about 20X to see your holes and most will be down right poor at 60x so Id stick with a scope that has a lower power variable range something in the 10 to 30 or 40 range would be more than enough.

I agree with the Celestron but check out the Ultima 100. It's $100 bucks more but it's a much better scope. I've heard that some of the 600 yard benchresters have been using it. If they can see bullet holes at 600 yards than 100 yards would be a snap.....even for tired eyes!!

Jack had it partly right, it's not power that resolves tiny objects, (or bullet holes), at long distance, it's aperture and a 100mm aperture is 50% bigger than an 80mm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
