Spring and early Summer Coyotes?

I keep reading statements like, "Now that coyotes season is winding down...".

I am curious as to why people seem to stop hunting dogs now that Spring is approaching? The ethical questions aside, is it because the coyotes won't come to a call or is it something else? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I started hunting seriously for coyotes this winter and did fairly well for a "newbie", but I hate the thought of not hunting now that Spring is near. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If anyone can tell me why the "season" is winding down, I would really appreciate it. (Most of the landowners I spoke to yesterday said they have yotes howling and around all year long.) Why can't we hunt them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Rusty,
Some folks hunt coyotes only for their fur. The nice winter coat is coming off really fast now. Some folks don't like the idea of shooting coyotes in spring and early summer because of the good chance that the pups will starve in their dens without mom and pop to bring them food. Other folks see the coyote has a predator of game birds and animals, as well as domestic livestock. This second group of hunters will shoot coyotes when ever they feel the need. I understand the feelings of both groups, and I respect their opinions. Do I shoot a few coyotes during spring and summer? Yes I do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am in the "protect livestock" group, however I still hold off except for maybe a few, during denning season. Even tho we loose calves to them, I still believe they play a part in nature and not be wiped out completely (if that's even possible), plus they are fun to hunt. I do however control the hogs as much as possible. Murry Burnham once sd. "the last creature on earth will be the cockroach, and you will have a coyote sniffing it" They are a survivor.

I hunt them year round. I also do a lot of depredation work. ANyone that says you can or will get rid of them is flat out wrong, you can try to keep a finger on their numbers, but you'll never get rid of them. They adapt and change their behavior better than almost anything. There is no season here, but like Rich said, it is a personal thing. If you want to keep hunting, by all means, keep hunting! Speaking of which...where are you in Oregon? My wife is from Bend and we are headed there in May...looking to do some hunting up that way. What do ya think?

Rustydog,
I hunt year round if I can, especially on our small ranch. When I see a dog I try to take it out. Also, Do you still have the video your trying to sell?

Rusty, I don't hunt much in the spring or early summer mostly due to the fact that I'm fishing. I will get out for spring turkey though. sean

I basically like to hunt coyote's year round. Most of my hunting places I got because the farmer or rancher whats me to kill all the coyotes I can. I advertise as a varmint control specialist so I usely hunt year round. I do slow down alot when the weather warms up because I start playing golf. The other reason I slow down during warm weather is that when I hunt during the day I like to lay on the ground and use my Predator Supreme Decoy, but I do not like to share the ground with rattlesnakes. Most of my hunting during warm weather is night hunting out of the back of a pickup.

I personally have never killed a coyote, but have taken over 30 red foxes so you can bet that I will be out this spring and summer trying my hardest to kill a yote. last fall while hunting elk with my bow a heard alot of coyotes talken which is very high up in the mountains. come this spring and summer there is alot of sheep hearders and their sheep and I know that, they dont want and coyotes around to eat the new baby lambs. So if you were to ask my rookie oppion I would say yes, but I am not against someone who does not think you should hunt in the spring or summer. Thats just my oppion.

i slow down on running my hounds in the spring. the main reason is they have babys.i do alot of night running in the summer cause its cooler for the hounds. plus alot of times the yotes wont leave at night. they will circle and never leave the section.

I will hunt through turkey season then thats it till next fall. Don't think there in any danger of extenction from me for sure. Don't think anybody else hunts them around here and seem to be quite a few yotes, just very smart yotes, lol. kyray

I respect both sides of the coin, especially those who hunt because of livestock issues.

I let the pups get big so I have something to hunt for come October.

I might go out a couple of times during summer to scout around. Other than that I leave the critters alone.

I catch up on reloading and sightin rifles in during the summer.

Rustydog,
My thoughts on this topic is, Ilove to hunt yotes
and do hunt them in the winter and early spring.
I don't want to come off like a bunny hugger but
i don't hunt yotes in the summertime. I let the
mother yotes raise me a new crop of targets. and
i spend the summer shooting sod poodles or p-dogs
and working on my loads, plus doing some fishing and other out doors activitys. Any way i don't have a problem with shooting yotes any time of the year it's gust that i don't do it myself.
Good luck and keep your powder dry,, Joe
