Squirrel season opens here August 1 never used a call before just sat under a good nut tree an watch for movement, just wondering if they worked, an can u make a homemade one?

Check out bees O'Brien on here. I've got a few of his squirrel calls and they're the best I've found hands down. Squirrel calls work great for either spot stalking or still hunting and the easiest way to learn is to just get out and listen to the way they sound and try to mimic them.

they work here in Iowa. like kittykiller said, check out Bees O'Brien, he is a custom call maker on here. he makes some really nice squirrel calls. id get one of his shakers and a "cutter" from him and you would be set!!

I tried one last year. I gave it a quick shake into about 5 quick barks then blew on the end of it 5 quick chirps to make what was suppose to be a baby squirrel in distress sound but I can not tell any difference between it and a regular ole mouse squeaker. they was a few squirrels set in to barking all over the woods. I set there quit for about 10 minutes waiting to see if any would move in on my location. I heard one make an excited barking sound to my right and turned to look and there set a bobcat about 15 ft. away sneaking up on me. If I would have had a gun I could have got some squirrels and a bobcat but I was just trying out some small game broad heads I had made and the bobcat shot out of there right when I looked at it. I cant say the squirrel call would call in any squirrels to your location but it will cause them to bark and give away there location.

Work here in Kansas too on our big fox squirrels. I don't know about making your own, I just picked up a standard one at the local gun shop. I like to start off nice and fairly quiet, then once one starts responding, I try to mimic exactly what he does. Watch out, the little things get MAD lol.
