Stadium seat

When Craig and I were hunting at Wikieup, he had a real neat seat for use on the ground. There was some discussion about it, but little specifics. I see them at all kinds of prices, and picked one up from Sportsmans Guide for a dozen bucks or so.

It is easy to carry.

The pocket on the back is handy, and large enough that Craig carried his FoxPro in it.

Then I got a foam backpack mattress (closed-cell foam), and glued a piece on the seat with KIWI Sport and Shoe Patch. Craig said he used saddle glue on his. I imagine that any glue that remains flexible after it dries will work. I just used what we had on hand. This mattress pad will keep it quiet, give more cushion where it counts, and keep the nylon material from wearing out on the bottom.

I'm ready to hunt that low cover now, Craig!!

Yes Sir you are indeed!

I cant tell you how much I like my seat, I just wont go calling without that dang thing anymore.

Critr and Craig,

Thanks for the picts of your calling seats. I just recieved mine today. It is made by Crazy Creek and I ordered it from Sierra Trading Post for $26.00. It is camoed and I can tell already it will be nice when a guy doesn't have an available back rest to lean up against when on stand.

These Crazy Creek seats are kind of expensive. Normally they are around $40.00 but Sierra has them marked down right now if anybody is interested. www.SierraTradingPost.com

Thanks for the information on the seat.

I have one of these seats built into my turkey vest, which I use to carry all my calls and water and more stuff than one would ever want around the desert;

I have been using one of the turkey hunting vests with built in seat for five years. One of the best accessories I have.Plenty of pockets for gear and the back pocket is used to carry my decoys and other large gear. It's just a black stadium seat built into the vest.Provides a back rest where there is no natural one and a compfy dry cushion off the ground.I highly recommend them.

Boy that looks comfy! Might have to get one. My back has been aching the last few times calling. Be nice to have a backrest all the time. One of those turkey vests might be handy too for a pack-rat like me! LOL Thanks for the tips.

Just an update on my chair experience. I have been using my Crazy Creek chair for the past couple of weeks and I love the thing. I didn't realize how much more comfort it adds to sitting on stand.

OK--I'm let's say I'm sitting in my stadium chair (like the one in picture at the top) out on the bare prairie with no fencepost or tree to lean back against, and I have a predator coming in. I slowly draw my knees back and up towards my chest so I can raise my rifle and rest it on my knees. Do I tip over backwards now??? I don't see what is going to keep the bottom seat part on the ground when I raise my hams/knees up to steady my rifle. Am I missing something here? Enlighten me please!

Silverfox,

I think it's your butt that holds the seat down, It sounds simple but it was the first thing to come to mind?

Silverfox, I thought the same thing you are saying before I got the Crazy Creek chair that I have been using.

No, you won't tip over the backrest and seat are connected . You can shorten the straps that connect the backrest and seat so it is not quite a 90 degree angle. That way when you draw your knees up there will still be tension on the back rest. Also by spreading your knees open puts pressure on the straps and it holds you in place.

I sit on stand with my knees already up but even if you sit with your legs down you won't tip over when drawing your legs up. You might lean slightly more back but that will draw the seat up as you raise your knees.

That is why I shorten the straps so it will actually help steady my knees and make for a more stable shot.

Do you rest the rifle directly on your knees or do you rest your elbows on your knees when holding the rifle? Most of the time I am using a bipod so maybe it would be different for me than it would be for you shooting from the chair.

I would think out on the open plains it would be real nice to have something to lean up against. I know in my area I was always looking for a tree, bush, rock, fence post, etc to lean up against.

I hope I am explaining this well enough so it just isn't confusing. I'd be happy to try and answer it better if you have more questions.

Take care Silverfox, and I enjoyed your fox pictures a few days back. Keep them coming.

Silverfox you most certainly will not fall over backwards just because you bring your knees up to shoot.

What you do is that when you are sitting there waiting for a critter you can lean back just as if you were up against a tree or post.

The instant that you start to bring your knees up you are going to lean foward for balance just as you would if you had NO backrest.

The seat and backrest at that point becomes simply a pad to keep your butt of the ground.

I still may not be explaining it to your satisfaction, but I will assure you that your concerns are groundless.

You may not like one for other reasons, but falling over backwards is not going to be one of them.

Thanks for the answers Wildoats, Lonny, and Craig. I'm going to have to test one of these seats at Scheel's next time I go to town.

I must do this sitting thing different than some of you. When I sit next to a tree, fence post, power line pole, I put a lot of pressure on that backrest and use it to steady myself and I have my elbows on or close to my knees. My left knee is pulled up a little higher than my right and my right knee is splayed out to a more horizontal direction. I am pushing back against the backrest with my left leg so there is quite a bit of pressure on whatever I am leaning against.

I know I wouldn't LET myself tip over backwards, but without something to hold the backrest in a vertical position, I don't see where I would get the same back support that I get out of a fence post or tree. The part of that seat that is under my thighs is (IMHO) going to raise up as I raise my thighs to get my knees up. I suppose that is as clear as mud too?!?!?!?!

Most of my calling is done in the prone position, so it would be no big loss if a seat like this didn't work for me, but once in awhile I get into a good calling spot that doesn't have a good spot to lay down and I have to sit with no backrest. Thanks for the help.
