Starting decoy dogs out at a young age

I've been doing quite a bit of work with decoy dogs lately. I've always went overboard when it comes to dogs and seem to accumulate quite a few, soon as the wife turns her head.

Here are a couple of new pups (Dixie and Brandy) that I acquired from fellow PM members. The blonde is a Mountain Cur from Wackmaster out of Colorado. Great bloodlines out of a host of decoy dogs. Even at a very young age, she can't help but put a tooth into coyotes. The brindle is a Mountain Cur / Jagd cross from Devin69 out of Colorado, as well. She's showing a bunch of grit and a phenominal nose at a young age.

Here they are working over some coyotes that I was trying to get skinned, this morning. I was working on skinning one, when I looked over and saw the pups roughing up these. I grabbed the camera and snapped some pics. They've been around quite a few dead ones, since they've been here and have already gain quite a hatred for them. They gone from baying to mouthing them, just in the past week or so. Both of these females show great prospects and will be joining Gunner in the field, when they get some more age under them.

Dixie and Brandy getting ahold. They don't quite know that it's already been dead for a few hours.

After all that action (and a bath), it's time to take a good nap.

If they turn out as good as they appear to be, they'll not only be joining Gunner in the field, but the breeding program, as well.

Gunner has been doing very well his first season and did some night calling with us last night. We called up 16 coyotes and Gunner got to work a few of them, let alone making recovery at night way, way, way easier. He's now up to 189 coyotes under his belt, at 11 months old. (Yeah, I'm kind of proud of him.

Thought I'd share.

Love that 3rd picture. That's quite a pup. I'll be down there in your neighorhood next week. Hope the hunting is good.

Hey Tony, I have a great bird dog and he doesn't see that many pheasants in an entire season. You are going to have a phenominal dog when he matures. Way to go!!!

You guys are killing me with the decoy dogs, problem for me is i'm not sure I have the drive, it is interesing for sure.

Tony those are some cool photos.

What do you mean about not having the drive, Chaz? You mean patience with raising a pup or do you mean owning a dog?

Thanks all.

Tony

I know it takes a lot of work and dedication to train a working dog properly and the know how. I would hate to mess up a good blood line.

man those are nice dogs! id be very very proud of them!
im trying to talk Dad into letting me a lab for duck and dove hunting! the only thing about labs though is they eat more than me! haha great pics!

Those sure are some cute pups, Tony. It cracks me up seeing them tear into those coyotes like that. That should be good decoy dogs for sure. That picture of Gunner on stand is pretty cool. The intensity in his eyes is awesome.

Chaz, the bloodline does most of the work. The pups just have that kind of nature in them. You just have to spend some time with your dog and it will pick up on what you want. You should talk to some of these guys and ask them some questions. Everyone of them have been MORE THAN HELPFUL anytime that I have a question.

Looks like you have a great bunch of dogs there, maybe the one i am bringing you in Feb. will fall right in there with them, oh i hope your wife isn't reading this might not know about that one yet......... LOL

we can no longer hunt coyote's here with dog's in washington. had bear hounds in the late 80's. you have some great looking pup's. i think they will be killer next year. Rick

Tony,

When and if the breeding program starts please sign me up for one of the males.

My big ol rhodesian is getting older and a new pup is on the horizon in the next couple years. Would love one of these curs to run around with in the field and at work.

Beautiful animals and way to go out there man.

Andrew
