Been slacking on here, but I’m still alive. This heat has been horrible and I don’t set footholds during fawning season so my coyotes had a free denning season.
Well, due to some unforeseen circumstances my main property was sold. This actually turned out to be a good thing because going from a millionaire owner to a billionaire owner means some serious improvements, except I had to become an employee vs a contractor. The new owner likes to hunt…everything. We’re still in the quail business but also deer, turkey, and duck, lol.
I’ve still been trapping coons and possums and everything was good until I started getting coyotes on camera. Apparently pups are roaming and mom and dad ain’t too far away. I decided if they’re old enough to be playing around and if they come to a call, they’re old enough.
I had a good wind for where I’d been seeing them and went out in the 90 degree temps (at night) with a Thermacell in my back pocket to give it a try. See below video.
The very next evening while checking traps I saw one checking out his dead sibling where I’d dragged it off. I went fishing until dark and came in from the South this time and immediately spotted a pup hunting with the scanner. I set up the tripod with the caller still in my “diaper bag” on my back. I wasn’t in a rush due to the winds actually holding steady and hoping others were close. I don’t know what happened to the pup, but he yelped at something in the grass and here comes momma. I was able to take her and of course the pup stayed put so after scanning a little I decided to take it as well before the wind changed like it always does.
Sometimes it’s just better to be lucky than good, lol.
