Stock for Mauser action

I have a .270 rifle with a Douglas barrel built on a Mauser action from the main Mauser the Germans used in WWII (98k?).

I want to replace the beat up walnut barrel with a synthetic. Any suggestions about which stock is best?

Thanks in advance.

You will want to do a little research before you purchase a stock, as there are several variations on the mauser action. I went through the same research and verified that my custom 6.5x55 was built on a large ring model 98 mauser action. The web site that I used is no longer available, but it showed the correct measurements between the two large action screws under your receiver. My large ring 98 (I just measured it) has the screws approximately 7 7/8 inches apart at the centers. Hope this helps. Todd

Oh, and 2MuchGun is correct...you will need to verify if your bolt has been altered or is in original condition. Tod

In .270 hopefully it's a '98 (long action), the '96 (short action) wasn't built to withstand the pressure of anything larger than a 6.5 X 55.

There are many synthetic stocks available for Mausers from Ramline under $100 to McMillan at over $400. You will probably want to do a little research and maybe see a good gunsmith as there are many variations of bolt (and safety) modifications and even variations of bottom metal depending on which year and country your gun was made in.

Well worth doing IMHO but you will be VERY lucky to find a "drop in" stock. Plan on it needing some fitting and finishing.

Good luck and good shooting.

Has the bolt handle been altered?

Yes.

I know I'll not have a true 'drop-in'.

My question is which the after market stocks is the best.

My friend and his father(RIP) have about 4-5 M98's in Bell and Carlson stocks. They all shoot pretty good. B&C isn't McMillan or H-S, but thet aren't crap like Ram-Line or Outers either. Unless you have some sort of stock-fitting experience or plan on having a gunsmith do it, I would stay away from Boyd's--2MG

I have yet to find a better stock than McMillan. They are very rigid, fairly light, and can be had in neat colors.

Better than Bell and Carlson?

Yes. McMillan is better than B&C. So is H-S Precision. I won't tell you which is better or I'll start a war. They are both top of the line. B&C is a mid-grade so to speak.--2MG

You might want to check their web site, but I don't believe HS Precision makes a stock for the 98 Mauser action. - BCB

There isn't one listed on their website.

MCMillan for sure has a nice one but it takes some skill to get it to fit -ie, it's not a drop in.

definatly no Ram-line I thought they were O.K. untill I was doing the anual cleaning of the guns and found a huge crack in the stock in the pistol grip right behind the trigger of my 1903-A3. glad I saw it before I took it shooting!!!

richards microsoft gun stocks are verry nice looking good on the buget and are almost drop in you just need to do some final fitting as every mauser is different as far as what bolt handle you use is it bent ect. so you will need to grind your bolt and trigger area provided you used a custom trigger. a little work alway makes the project more exciting anny way that is my 2 cents.
