Stockys Stocks

Has anyone ever ordered from www.stockysstocks.com? I am thinking about ordering a laminated thumbhole stock for my Savage Model 11 FXP3 in .204 Ruger. Has anyone had any trouble fitting a stock to this particular model?

Thanks in advance!

Lots of folks over on Rimfirecentral buy from Stocky's, you could get a good idea of their quality and fit from asking those guys.

I'm pretty sure they bought out Fajen and offer the same stock I'm using, except now it's called the Tundra.

They sell a heck of a lot of thumbhole laminate stocks, so somebody likes them.

i bought a laminated thumbhole stock for my savage from stockys. put it on and took it off. di'nt like it at all. i have short fat fingers and could hardly reach the trigger

+1...

I purchased a laminate thumbhole for my most recent custom built by Jon Beanland, love the fit and finish. It is too glossy for field work imo. Have not shot it yet waiting on a base screw from burris, should have some time with it late next week when I get home.

I've heard a lot of good things about Beanland. Should be a shooter.

He should have talked you into a better stock.....

I can't speak to your stock choice, but I do have experience
ordering from Stocky Stocks.

If it is in-stock, I wouldn't think twice about ordering
a stock from Stocky. If he has to order it, I would not
believe the estimated ship time. I got a 8 to 12 week
ship time, and IIRC it was 16 weeks, or more. Fortunately
I didn't need it sooner than 16 weeks. Oh, and when you
place an order for an out-of-stock stock, he charges your
card, at the order time, with a "No Cancel" policy clearly
stated on his site. So once you pull the trigger on an
out-of-stock order, you are stuck waiting until delivery.

So my advice is stick with in-stock purchases, and you will
enjoy doing business with Stocky. Out-of-stock purchases...
Not so much.

I just got 2 of the Tundra deluxe thumbhole stocks. One was for an older staggered feed long action and everything was perfect. I slightly oversized the action inletting and bedded it. The other one is for a centerfeed short action. At this point I'm nearly done converting it over to a DBM setup. I wasn't fond of how the centerfeed magazine had to be placed in the stocks mag. well so a DBM conversion seemed like a good option.

Overall I'm very happy with the finish of both stocks and the inletting was pretty much spot on and even though I bedded both it wasn't terribly necessary. As I mentioned above if your model 11 is a centerfeed (4.4" screw spacing) than it'll take a little effort (redneck engineering) to get the mag box to sit right.

2MG, I do not know if I will be happy with it once I get behind it but for the money thought I would try it. I had always wanted to try a thumbhole and I like laminate and the color purple.

Hey thanks guys for the responses. I visit PM frequently, I do not do much of posting but I have learned SOOOO MUCH by browsing around. This is the best forum, not only predator hunting but for hunting, shooting, calling, etc...You guys have taught me alot.

I did some searching around and I think I will go with a Boyds stock rather than Stockys.

Just out of curiousity, it seems like some of you are not fond of a laminate thumbhole? What are the problems you have with the stock? I have researched them some-what and like what I hear. I have also shouldered them and like the feel, however, I have never shot a thumbhole. I like everything about them, but to each their own; just curious to know the reasons why some of you do not prefer them.

Thanks!

Some poeple prefer a more traditional looking stock or just don't care for the feel of thumbholes. I love them for look, feel and control. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Although the Boyds stocks are less expensive than the Stocky's models Boyds does not offer a stock for a 4.4" screw spacing (a.k.a centerfeed). If your model 11 is the newer centerfeed model than you'll have to enlarge the front action screw hole and epoxy in a new pillar on the Boyds in order for the stock to work.

Never cared for thumbhole stocks, but I have ordered from Stocky's before. Never been dissapointed with them. My last order was for an HS-Precision PVS102 black with tan webbing. It was for my older Savage 12FV 22-250. They had to order since color option was not standard. It arrived 6 weeks later, just as they quoted. Good pricing & some bargains at times for items that are in stock.

take care,
HS

Boyd's stocks are famous for crappy inletting. Have seen some of it first hand. Even if I did like laminates or thumholes, Boyds would not be on the list of potential purchases.

The reason I do not like laminates and thumbholes:

--Do not like the feel of a thumbhole at all, and like the looks even less

--Heavier than real wood, not as nice looking

--Heavier than composites, yet not as durable

FWIW here are some of my "ugly"

thumbholes.
From top to bottom, .25-06 w/ Stocky's Tundra Deluxe(woodland camo), .243AI w/ modified Richards Microfit Tackdriver(tigerwood laminate), .223 w/ DBM converted Stocky's Tundra Deluxe(cayenne), .17HMR w/ Savage factory thumbhole(nutmeg).

I don't like the laminate thumbhole stocks because they're usually to big in the pistol grip, they're heavier than a good fiberglass stock and for a hunting gun it's a pita to take the safety off especially in a Remy 700. I have to almost remove my hand to get my thumb out. Target gun or maybe a prairie dog gun might be ok but not for hunting where the action can and will be fast and furious.

Once again appreciate the information!

It seems like main reason for disliking the laminate thumbholes is for personal reasons (feel, look, weight). No disrespect intended 2muchgun. I was just concerned if the reason for dislikes had anything to do with performance. Like I said before, to each their own. BTW, LOVE the Pulp quotation

Like wdchuckhunter, I personally like the feel and look of the thumbhole laminates, although I do not care for the shiny bright colors on some. I especially like the color and design on wdchuck's .234AI. Anyway, anything is better than the black synthetic stock I have now.

wdchuck - Thanks for the info on the measurements. My rifle is 4.4". I will be ordering from stockys because of this. After looking at the specs, you are right. I swear when I was looking before they offered the 4.4" measurments.

Thanks everyone!

This forum kicks A$$

Looks obviously have nothing to do with performance, but weight and feel do IMO.

Personally, I can't stand the sight of those stocks, and like them even less when I pick one up. That's just me, and not everyone shares my opinion. That is why they make so different types of stocks.

Show us a pic of what you end up with......
